Just did TheBus from Waikiki to the Bishop Museum. Plus - $2.50. Minus - took an hour to get there with many, many stops. Bus stop is a couple blocks over so you need to know which way to go as you cannot see the museum from the stop. Hubby disliked it so much that we paid the $24 back in a taxi that the museum people were kind enough to call for us. Definitely cheaper but if time is precious, may not be a good trade.

Bishop Museum was awesome though! Hawaiian Hall, Oceania, Children's science hall, planetarium, native plant garden - we planned poorly and took the bus about 1:30 so didn't get there till almost 3 and they close at 5 or 6 pm. We rushed through and did okay but you could certainly spend many more hours. I'd say it is worth the effort and if you pick up one of the "This Week's Oahu" there is a coupon for $3 off the admission of $19.95 (but get a coupon for each admission.)

For others looking for day trips in Honolulu, in addition to Pearl Harbor, those who are interested in military history should visit the US Army Museum at Fort Bragg, right on the beach (although the entrance faces Kalakaua Ave). It goes from early times through WW II, Korea and Vietnam. The timeline compares what is going on in the USA (Revolutionary War, War 1812, etc) to what is happening in the islands, and there are interesting photos of early Waikiki. A Hall of Heroes recognizes those from the islands who have been awarded important medals including the Medal of Honor. On the roof is a Cobra helicopter and a missile launcher (?) There is also a small gift shop that has some neat stuff if you have veterans you want to buy gifts for - I would have loved to have found this before my dad passed. Not a big time investment - half a day at most, and there is no charge, donations accepted.

I think fairygemgirl is writing about the museum at FORT DERUSSY. It is just east of the Hale Koa Hotel and Hilton Hwn Village.

Thank you all so much for,the additional information. I really appreciate it.

WhiteWalker, I will try very hard to get up the courage to go down in the cage! Does it only go down a little bit? Do we snorkel, so only go down that far? I know my friend really wants to do this..... So I'm sure I'll end up going !

There is a free museum that is open to the public, Tropic Lightning Museum, at Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa if you are in the area. Use Lyman Gate off Kunia Road.
