Looking for a beach vacation on the Southern Coast...
My husband and I recently moved to Charlotte, NC from NYC. We have not a clue where to vacation close by, that has a nice beach, has a tasteful and fun nightlife and isn't too expensive! Am I asking too much? Help!

Kristen,
since Myrtle Beach is the closest one to you, yes--you are probably asking too much.
I contend that the Grand Strand (centered on Myrtle Beach but including other beach communities North and South) has a very nice beach. As to *tasteful and fun* nightlife, you can probably get either/or, but not both.
Your best bet is probably Hilton Head SC, which is about 6 hours away (though mostly on interstate highways).
If you are selective, you could have a decent vacation at the Grand Strand. For instance, stay ocean-front at Kingston Plantation (between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach)--a gated resort somewhat like the plantations at Hilton Head. Dine at any of the following nice restaurants: Collector's Cafe; Flamingo's; Nick's; Rossi's or Marker 350--all within about 20 minutes of Kingston Plantation. As to nightclubs, that's not my forte, but a new club called Club Kryptonite opened up at Broadway at the Beach (across from the Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood). There are also a variety of clubs/bars at Celebrity Square in Broadway at the Beach.
Warning--if you do go to the Grand Strand, which you should at some point (it's a requirement of being a full-fledged Charlottean):
1. Avoid mid-June through mid-August when it is extremely crowded; instead come in the Fall (best time of year by far, September through November) or Spring.
2. Ignore the stuff you think is tacky or distasteful and focus on what you like.
3. Have fun trying several of the over 500 different routes to beach from Charlotte (that's not much of an exaggeration); everyone has a favorite, and it depends largely on what part of Charlotte you call home. If you live in South Charlotte, I know a route that will get you from Ballantyne to North Myrtle Beach in under 3:10 (consistently) without speeding more than 10 MPH over any given limit.
Have fun wherever you go, and welcome to the South! Hope you can adjust to a larger, more diverse city

As a fellow North Carolinian I would recommend Wilmington, a 4 hour drive from Charlotte. There are many wonderful B&Bs, has a lot of Southern charm, not too big, and the beaches at nearby Wrightsville Beach are quite nice. Wilmington is like visiting a miniture Charleston or New Orleans without the riff raff.
