Lodging: Jackson or GTNP or Teton Village?

We are planning our 1st trip to this area next Sept. We like outdoor activities, hiking etc. but would also like a nice room and access to good restaurants. If we have 4 or 5 nights, should we split the time between GTNP and Jackson or stay the entire time in one place? Would Teton Village be a good compromise? Is it too far to drive from Teton Village to Jackson for dinner?

Our preference is not to split time. We've spent a week each at both Jackson Lake Lodge and then another time at Jenney Lake Lodge (both of which are further than Teton Village) and found getting to/from Jackson no problem. The drive is so spectacular we rather looked forward to it. Teton Village shouldn't be a problem at all, though I can't comment on accommodations since we haven't stayed there.

Regardless of where you end up, the restaurant at Jenny Lake Lodge is extremely nice with excellent food and service and would highly recommend at least one dinner there.

We stayed at Teton Village a couple of years ago - it was perfect and we went to Jackson for dinner every night. We were a family of 4, including 2 teens, so having a 2 bedroom condo with LR and full kitchen was great. Balcony overlooked field/marsh with birds and wildlife. One day we went looking for moose to photograph in GTNP and found none - only to return to condo to find a huge one eating the landscaping.

Condo was really comfortable after day outdoors. Even had fireplace. We used kitchen for breakfasts and to pack lunches for our day trips.

Be aware that there is somewhat limited housekeeping - there are set days - about 3 per week, and if your stay is short you may never get housekeeping. But place was clean to start with and we never felt need for someone to clean BR every day and change bed linens.

Regardless of which you choose, do take that dirt road which is a back way from the Teton Village area into GTNP. We loved that little drive, and if you go very early you will see lots of wildlife. We saw moose several times in the wetlands area.

We just got back from a similar trip. One thing to watch is what will be closed when you're there -- we arrived October 3, and that was really too late for staying in GNTP or for most park facilities.

We stayed 2 nights in Teton Village at the Alpenhof. Very cute and comfortable, plus they have a really great restaurant. Highlight meal for me of the entire trip was the bison tenderloin that I had there. We did find that Teton Village didn't have much else at that time of year, but it's really close to that dirt road that BayouGal recommended (Moose-Wilson Road). I would be happy eating at the Alpenhof every day, but you could drive into Jackson, it's not too far. http://www.alpenhoflodge.com/alpenhof.htm
