I personally think a night on the town with a limo would be more fun. Go back early, change clothes and have the limo pick you up to go to a nice dinner and a play/show and pick you up after to go home. This may be expensive to have them wait so maybe just a trip to dinner and show....?
You'll all have a great time. Enjoy!

I am a college student who grew up in NYC. Believe it or not, the best things to do are inexpensive.
-If you go to a yankee game, bleacher seats. Not as great as they used to, but I find it more exciting.
-As for shows, i didnt catch whether you had boys/girls or what not but i saw stomp and blue man when i was younger and i loved it. Not sure when you'll be there but de la guarda was crazy. A good crazy that is.
-also, there are websites that have lots of ideas that i cant remember offhand.
-i'm sure people said serendipity... always crowded but down the block is a really good candy store which kids love a lot. Seems like i'm not as much help as i thought but keep this in mind... there is always something special to do in NY. and TRL live which is mtv in times square at around 3pm is fun for that age group. great idea!!

Marriott Marquis is awsome! It's in the middle of everything....right next door to MTV if you decide to go there. Be sure to take them up to the revolving restaurant at the Marquis (or bar....there were many children in there several months ago when i was there & it's MUCH less expensive) on the top floor. I don't know if it's still there, but inside the Times Square Visitor Center was a booth where you had a digital picture made, then they'd impose your face in a cartoon on a HUGE advertisment board above Times Square! Also, Hairspray is terrific! I know it's touristy, but you might want to consider a day on the Grey Line....it gives you a great "above the ground" view of the city and you can get on and off as you want.

SR you don't say which airport you're arriving at. I tend to agree that the limo, once you're already in NY, is a better idea than from airport, particularly from LGA (short trip) or JFK (flat taxi rate of $35).
The Marriott Marquis is probably a great place to stay (haven't seen rooms). It's got a glass elevator in the lobby. There's also a theater (can't remember which one) right in the building. It is right in the middle of Times Square so it's really convenient for using the TKTS booth for discount theater tkts. The rotating restaurant at the top is lots of fun. There are also tons of restaurants in the area & it's not too far from the Intrepid-so all, in all, a great place to stay with kids. I have heard the rooms at the W, which another poster suggested, are VERY small.
I think the Macy's fireworks are usually on the East River so best viewing is in the 50's. If you stay at the Marriott you can take a crosstown bus at 42 st., or 50 st. to the last stop.
