LAX airport area hotels
Want to take 2 granddaughters to California in August. Staying at hotel across from Universal Studios for 2 nights but want to then go less expensive for day at beach, shopping, Grauman's etc. There's a hotel by LAX called Renaissance Montura Hotel Los Angeles. Can anyone give me an opinion on it? Safe? Good for kids? Quiet inside? Any recommendations for hotels in low $100s if Montura isn't the answer. Thanks for any help.

You might be better off staying near Universal Studios and driving to the beach. LAX area isn't really tourist friendly let alone the safest for kids. Which beach are you looking to visit? Santa Monica? Manhattan?

The immediate LAX area (Century Blvd or Inglewood) is not a good place to stay. However, there are some family-friendly suite hotels, with mini kitchens, in the El Segundo, Hawthorne & Manhattan Beach areas. They are close to the freeway and 10 minutes from the beach. Springhill Suites, Hawthorn Suites, Embassy Suites. Most include free breakfast. The Manhattan Beach Marriott or Residence Inn would also be a better option.
You should probably do all your Hollywood "stuff" while you are staying in Universal City, leaving your stay near LAX for your beach time.

Hermosa Beach has a Hampton Inn that is 10 minutes from LAX and a very safe neighborhood. Five minutes south the Hol Inn Express Redondo is also reasonable price. The Redondo location is a 10 minute walk from the pier and beach.

I should have mentioned that Renaissance is owned by Marriott and typically Renaissance's are upscale of a full service Marriott. The earlier post is exactly right that while the hotel might be fine, LAX hotels are not a tourist friendly area where safety needs to be a concern.

Look at www.seaview-inn.com for a hotel in Manhattan Beach, two blocks from the ocean and under $200 a night.
