Hi Linda,
If you decide to try to stay in the theater district for coffee, try John's Pizzeria on 44th Street - it is NOT a typical "pizza shop" the space was formerly a church and has an interesting interior. We discovered that not only does John's serve very good, reasonably priced food, it is open after theater for coffee and desserts. It is a large space, so securing a table should not be a problem. Have Fun!

"Coffee chop" is a relative term. If you mean a nice upscale diner, there are several on 9th Ave in the fo's. Just had an incredible (and huge!) banana split at one a few weeks ago. The coffee was okay but nothing special. The banana split was terrific. You might look for a retaurant that seats for light after theater meals and also seats folks for coffee and dessert. If it's a coffeehouse cappucino/espresso bar type atmosphere you seek... I'm not aware of any in the midtown area that are open late (other than Starbuck's and you don't need to come all the way to NYC to hang at Starbucks!). There are some great espresso joints open late but you'll need to trek to the Upper east or west sides or to the Village or Chelsea to find them (if someone knows of one in midtown west... PLEASE tell me as I'lll start going there!).
