Late, I know...But we need ideas for a ski trip.

Now don't laugh, but a small group of friends want to take a last minute ski trip the first week in April (3nights only). None of us have ever skied before, so I'm not sure how important perfect powder is. While several posts stated that the skiing is bad in certain ares; I couldn't find any that said which might still be good. Colorado will be the easiest for us to get to; we don't want to break the bank; and we need some night life/activies incase the skiing falls thru. Any suggestion on hotels will also be helpful. Thanks so much!

Janelle, I can't help you with Colorado, but have you thought about Utah? THe skiing should still be good then and many resorts are running incredible specials because the Olympics seem to have kept people away this year.

Hi Jenelle.
Not to worry typically April is one of the snowiest (sp) months of the year. Look at places with higher elevation, such as Summit County or Vail. Also depending on When your coming in April rates maybe less.

For Nightlife Breckenridge or Vail. if your on a budget look at some of the owner direct sites such as www.summitnet.com or www.vrbo.com
do not be afraid to inquire if they have lower rates than what is posted, many will negociate if they still have openings. Another site that sometimes has good deals is skigolfvacations.com

one other thing about summitnet.com is on thier web page the have a form that allows to to put in your requirments as to location, budget amenitites then sends it out to all on there data base, good fast way to see what is avail. Word of advice be as flexible as you can about those things that do not really matter to you.

Usually a condo is a better lodging deal than a hotel, also saves money on beverages and food. Nothing better than after a day of skiing to sit in a hot tub with a bottle of wine! then back to the condo to relax before heading out!

To save on lift tickets by them before you arrive. Many stores in denver sell Discounted tickets and some areas offer discounts on thier web pages.

Have fun and again your not to late to make plans, may just work in your favor!

I agree with Utah. They are running great deals now that the Olympics are over and the skiing was down anyway.

The northern half of Colorado got some really good snow last week. The skiing conditions had gotten pretty bad before then, but I expect they are good now. Durango got virtually nothing - too bad.

I saw a report on the Today show today (or yesterday) that said the Canadian resorts have the most snow and best bargains right now. Whistler/Vancouver would be a great idea...

Jenelle,

You're in luck! I was browsing msnbc.com's Travel section yesterday and there was a very nice article titled "Choosing a resort for spring skiing".

http://www.msnbc.com/news/719269.asp

It looked pretty helpful to me, and offered up Arapahoe Basin in Summit County as an option. You should check it out! Good luck and have a great time!

Keep your eyes on the snow reports. If we don't get more snow it's going to pretty thin in April, which is bad news for Vail (lower altitude) and Keystone and A-Basin which have very poor base conditions. I skied today at Breck and it is getting pretty sticky on the way back into town. Pray, chant or wish for snow, please!!!!!

Quickie, Utah, Snowbird and Alta will probablyhave the best conditions. Stay in park city or if you real y eant to go cheap Salt Lake. But that time of year you can get a condo in park city really reasonable. I'm going to VAil/Beaver Creek from 3/28-4/6 so I hope the snow is good. Colorado has some great places too, A BAsin is my favorite almost 14000ft . If you've got the time, go to Whistler, the american dollar makes everying almost 50% off and the skiing is great... good luch

Hi Jenelle! April skiing is great at the higher altitude resorts like Snowbird and Alta. Park City area resorts can be good too depending on conditions. We are supposed to get over a foot of snow this Thur/Fri so that's good news.

Lodging rates drop after April 1 & some resorts offer spring specials on lift tickets. Call & ask. April skiing in Utah is a well kept secret. It's normally the second snowiest month of the season.....but with warm sunny days & NO lift lines.

I'm a Tahoe native and will probably be voted out of the club for it, but easiest in-out access could be Salt Lake area resorts. We have had ample coverage at the Tahoe resorts this season, and like Tony said, we expect to get about 2 feet more in the next day or two. So...maybe you consider flying into Reno-Tahoe and jetting up to North Shore---Squaw, Alpine or Northridge. And I can stay in the club.

If they predict it, for sure it won't show up. Never fails. It's clear and sunny in Breck right now. Denver will probably get the foot, we get an inch with 50mph winds. Go figure.

Just came back from skiing at Winter Park. We had fresh powder Thursday and still very nice snow Friday. Skiing is usually pretty good there, and the prices aren't as out-of-line as Vail and Aspen. We'll be skiing at Steamboat next weekend--snow reports indicate that Steamboat has even better conditions than Winter Park (though it's slightly pricier). Steamboat has had some great deals this year, and there is a night life there (which there really isn't at Winter Park). Last fall--prior to ski season--I spent a few days at Snowbird in Utah, and the resorts folks are recommending there are probably great too. I guess if you're staying at a hotel with a club, you have automatic membership, so the peculiar drinking laws aren't much of an issue.

Enjoy!!!

Hello Janelle,

I grew up in Winter Park and it is the best for beginners. They have a variety of beginner slopes and great night life. I htink you would really like it! I hope you have a great itme wherever you decide to go!!!

Spring skiing rocks in the Colorado high country. We skied Steamboat Wed and the conditions were great on top, alittle soft on the bottom. Your best bet for lodging, ski school and good condtions might be Copper Mountain. They have great spring deals and the snow is good. Not much night life but Frisco and Breckenridge are close by.
