last minute air travel

I may have to fly from Detroit to New York on very little notice for a job interview. There will be no possibility of an advance purchase, so I'm looking at paying $6oo for what would ordinarily be a $200 flight.
Can you reccomend the best site for last minute travel that does *not* involve blind bidding, as with priceline, hotwire, etc.
I have never used that type of service, and would nor feel comfortable having my first experience with bidding when I have the stress and tight time frame of a job interview.
I guess what I am looking for is the best "normal" site.
I know that many sites have last minute specials, but only on a few selected routes. I can't count on my route being "on sale."
Thanks for your help.
Richard

Spirit Airlines flies directly from Detroit to LGA and they are a low cost carrier. I would bet you could get a last minute ticket with them for under $250.

If you have time (and not money) there is a bus that costs $50ow from Detroit to NYC (no stops along the way). I've never taken it, but if you're interested let me know and i'll find you the info.

I just checked Spirit Airlines website and the roundtrip fare for Detroit to LGA departing this Monday and returning Wednesday is $159.

Richard, last year I used Priceline for the first time to get a last minute airfare to France from Seattle. I was nervous too, but it ended up working great. I submitted the amount i was willing to pay for RT airfare along with how flexible I was, and within minutes got confirmation that an airline accepted it (it was substantially lower than any published fare I could find, and beat Hotwire by $200. Everything worked great. No hitches at all. I got an E-ticket and itinerary very promptly. Good luck.

Spirit Airlines from NY to Detroit round trip was under $180 with less than one week advance notice when I checked them last week. It would not normally be my choice for an airline but all the majors were $600 and up for the same trip (I ended up not needing to make the trip but may have to in the future),
