Las Vegas with a ten year old
We will be at a convention at the Rio in Vegas March 4-7. We consider the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton a "must do". Can you give me some other recommendations for activities with my ten year old? Will the pool be open this time of year? - It looks great on the website.
Thank you

March could be too cool for swimming. As far as things to do, at the Mandalay, there's a shark acquarium that very good. At Mirage there's the tiger & dolphin habitat. At the Ceasar's forum shops there's the free lazer show, also the race to atlantis virtual reality ride (my kids loved this one).

Buy a magic trick from one of the magic stores. They will take you in the back room and show you how to do the trick. My son still performs the disappearing ball trick he learned.
Also, take a trip out to Red Rock Canyon (we rented a car to do this). Great hiking and exploring.
Others will disagree, but I did not think the trip to Hoover Dam was that interesting (particularly for the kids). I would have rather taken a boat ride on the lake.

The Stratosphere has 3 rides- a roller coaster, the big shot, and the xscream. The big shot scared me to death... I'm not sure if I would recommend doing any of those rides, unless he's big on thrills and chills.
I second the thought of the Shark Reef and the Secret Garden (at the Mirage). Both of those are pretty cool. If you're there when they're feeding or training the dolphins, you get to interact with them. The Shark Reef also has a touch pool where you get up front and personal with the animals.
What about the Adventuredome at Circus Circus? Normally, I wouldn't tell anyone to go to the casino, but you can take a back entrance into the casino and walk right into the Adventuredome. If he went on all the rides once, it would take around 2 hours (just my estimate). It's not huge, but they have all the traditional amusement park rides.

Luxor has some IMAX movies, and one ride, along with some other hokey stuff to see related to ancient Egypt( animatronic camels ! ). Just seeing the pyramid itself is kinda neat.
Lots of stuff at the Excalibur for kids. Their puppet shows attract large crowds.

Hi Crazy. I took my 11 year old this past August. FOR FREE, he enjoyed the Volcano at the Mirage, and loved the fountains at the Bellagio. For a small fee, we went to the top of the Stratosphere for the view (he's not into thrill rides). You both may enjoy a gondola ride at the Venetian. He also enjoyed getting a small, TEMPORARY tatoo from a street vendor (hey, its Vegas!) If you're looking for something to do at night, Lance Burton's magic show at the Monte Carlo is appropriate for kids, if you're o.k. with a few scantily clad women. If you manage seats near the front, Lance Burton takes a child from the audience and integrates him/her into the show in a substantial way. My kid was lucky enough to be that kid and it was a huge thrill for him. He got to disappear from the stage in a Corvette! If the seats you book are not near the front and you're willing to stand in the stand by line 1 hr prior to show time, they will usually upgrade your seats. Have fun.

Statia, if I told, you, I'd have to kill you! No, really, that's a good question. Not even he knows for sure!! It was one of the major acts of the show, and both my child and the car disappeared from the stage in a cloud of smoke. He said they ended up back stage, but it was kind of fuzzy to him. You should have seen my face when my kid disappeared! Anyway, the show got out at about midnite and as we were standing on the Vegas strip, show-goers were coming up to my 11 year old kid saying "hey Phil, great show!" It was truly an experience!

Have to second the Race For Atlantis in Ceasars Forum...there is the animatronic show in the middle of the forum, but also the Virtual Reality "ride"-make sure to check that out-it's GREAT!
Also, the Star Trek Experience was awesome-they have a great restaurant...I highly recommend going for lunch, whatever.

Dear crazy4Hawaii - Kudos to you for planning some fun activities for your ten-year-old! About 9 years ago, we stayed a few days at Caesars Palace with our 12-year old and his friend without making plans for them, and they were miserable. Needless to say, that puts a damper on everyone's fun. We felt so guilty that we promised to finance a return trip to Vegas for him and a friend when he was 21. Just finished that, and let me tell you, your method will be cheaper. Give us a report when you return, would ya? Kid activities are not often discussed. Have fun, one and all.
