Las Vegas- Tropicana

Has anyone stayed at the Tropicana-in their Garden rooms?
How was their Follies show?
Also what is the cost of a cab ride from the airport to the Tropicana?

The new elevated train system- is it free?
Does it take you to all the hotels along the stip?

First things first Bill...

Is this your first time? If so, what are your requirements?

The Tropicana is one of if not the oldest property on the strip. I have not seen their rooms but I have been in the comedy stop and to the Follies show. Many people say the rooms show their age. I think the location is good but some would say you should be more mid-strip, which may be true if this is your first time.

Follies is one of the longest running "old time Vegas" shows. Topless performers with big feather headresses and costumes. We enjoyed it with the idea that we wanted to experience Vegas of the 50's and 60's. We were also able to get a buy one get one deal which is not hard to come by. Jubilee is a similar show at Bally's and you can get 2 for 1 on their website.

Cab should be in the area of $10. The new monorail that will run on the East side of the strip behind the properties is scheduled to open later this summer..I do not know a specific date.

Hope this helps a bit.

The garden rooms are a room on the strip. If you look at them that way then they are okay. They are nothing to get excited about. Think Motel 6. The Tower rooms are much better.

I stayed at the Tropican a couple of years ago - not sure if it was a Garden room or a Tower Room. The room was older, not luxurious, but it was clean - it was similar to a room in a Holiday Inn, Best Western, etc. - a little nicer than Motel 6. For the price (I think I paid $40 a night including tax for one room for 4 adults), it was a perfectly acceptable room.

BillT - Yes, the Trop is one of the oldest properties on the Strip and the rooms - especially the Garden ones - are dated, and I'd have to agree that they are similar to what you'd find in a Motel 6. But they are clean and right near the pool. There's a lot of history at the Trop and it's neat to see all the photos of by-gone days and the celebrities that used to frequent the Trop & other hotels. There is a pretty good air show in the casino several times a day. Also, I believe the free bird show is still held during the day, but I don't know what time.

Unlike the way it is in most of the other mega-hotel/resorts on the Strip, you don't have to plod through the entire hotel, lobby & casino to get to/from your room and the pool or parking lot. The Garden rooms are situated near the parking lot which is very convenient.

I love the Trop and the pool area is one of the best on the Strip - complete with a swim-up bar & blackjack table. My sister and her daughters are coming in to visit in June and I've already reserved a room - a Garden one at that - for one day during their visit just so we can use the pool.

Since I live here in Las Vegas I don't take cabs so can't help with that but I don't think it's much $$ - the airport is right down the street.

The monorail isn't running yet and is behind schedule so I don't know when it will be running. There is a tram across the street from the Trop, though, at Excalibur and it goes between the Excalibur, Luxor & Mandalay Bay. Walking up or down the Strip is fun, but gets a little warm during summer. If it proves too much for you, jump on a city bus and ride to whichever hotel you want to go to. The busses run up & down the Strip every few minutes.

I usually stay at the Tropicana and in the garden rooms for several reasons. One is that I have a rental car and the garden rooms have easy access in and out of the hotel (three floors). If you get the right rooms you overlook the pool and it has a very tropical feel to it. You are very close to the casino without a lot of walking and elevator use which is great during busy times. I would agree with the others it is about Motel 6 quality, but I like the feel of it better than a tower room.

WARNING! Make sure they don't put you in the rooms overlooking Tropicana Avenue. You would be right where all the tour buses pull into.

The follies is old and long, but more importantly is that if your staying at the Tropicana and join the slot club you should be able to see it for free or 2 for 1 at least. The show is old time Vegas show girls. I believe the early show the girls leave the tops on and the later show is topless, but it's been awhile since I have seen it.

Check out the web site:

The rooms are pretty much like they show.
