Las Vegas - Harrah's Caesars Merger - Wow

First it is Mandalay being bought by MGM-Mirage, I thought that was slightly disturbing, now it is Harrah's agreeing to buy Caesars.

I am a long time Vegas visitor and I just imagine that in a few years the days of really cheap rooms may be coming to an end. I sure hope not.

I am not one who has been comped and have never had RFB or even a free room offer, but I have to think that with the size and coverage of these new mega companies the deals will get thin...

In my opinion, the deals were never there to begin with. With the introduction of every new uber-hotel, you'd think competition alone would bring down rates. Nope! Instead, they've had a different effect: the addition of great hotels over the last 10 years has actually raised the bar on hotel rates and even cheesy off-the-strip motels can charge more, because it's still a deal compared to ridiculous $400/night rooms at Venetian, Mandalay, Bellagio, etc. Even mid-week during the blazing summer, some hotels will never dip below $199 anymore. It's ridiculous! I think the trend for the next 10 years is that hotel chains will be renovating and upgrading their properties so they can justify charging even more!

The only way Vegas is ever going to offer deals is if California will allow true Vegas-style gambling within the state. I admit, if I could get good gambling within 1 hour of LA at a casino/resort that's as good and as big as the ones in Vegas, I would probably stop going to Vegas 10 times a year. But, we all know the Big Boys in Vegas give enough to California politicians to keep that from happening...

Simone, what about the new casino in down town Palm Springs? Same as Vegas, even a buffet is there!

The mega casino groups reward loyalty, so if you stick with one group (either Harrah's or MGM) and play enough, then you can get cheap hotel room offers easily. They really don't care about the occassional visitor who comes just once a year, and jump from casino to casino.

Faina - they're ok.... in terms of local LA gambling, I've only been to Commerce Casino, Crystal Park, and Normandy Casino. I've been to Pechanga out in Temecula. And around Palm Springs, I've checked out Morongo, Trump 29, and the new Spa Resort Casino in downtown Palm Springs. But, you know.... there's nothing like Vegas. Plus, CA gambling sucks if you like craps, which I do, and none of the CA casinos carry craps tables (yet, one can dream, right?) Also, the few blackjack tables that the casinos have are very low limit ($3 or $5 tables) and they're full to the max with very novice players. You're lucky if you can find a $25 table that also isn't full of people who hit with a 12 hand, when the dealer is showing 6. GRRRRR!

I agree with RKKWAN - you have to be loyal to one casino company to get any comps. My girlfriend just told me last week how she and her family are now connected to a particular casino host at The Hotel/Mandalay and they'll never stay anywhere else again.
