Lake Tahoe Help! North, South

We will join some family for a few nights on the South end in December. Using FF miles we will go into Reno airport a few days early and wonder about a nice area to stay for a few days in the Tahoe area.

We'd like a view of the lake, places to walk or drive nearby for dinner. View of the mountains too!
Not into gaming. Prob won't ski. Just want to relax and enjoy the views.

Any ideas? Might try vrbo.
Budget $150-200/nt.

Prefer condo with fireplace!

thanks in advance

beachkomer,
We were just there Sept 1-5. We stayed at The Resort at South Shore, a Wyndham time share Resort in Zephyr Cove. We had a fireplace in the condo. This property is also a World Mark property and I think they rent out by the day or week.

I bought a book from amazon.com called Tahoe, by Ann Marie Brown, a Moon publication -- less than $10. I highly recommend this book. It was very informative and helped us a lot. Good maps, things to see & do, good restaurant suggestions and details about the areas, parks & attractions.

We also flew into Reno, but we spent one night at Virginia City before going on to Tahoe. It was about an hour drive from there to the South Shore, so maybe a little less time to drive straight from Reno. On the way back to Reno, we drove around the west side of the lake to Truckee, then east to Reno, making several stops along the way, but actual drive time was probably less than 2 hours.

The condo at Zephyr Cove was a great location. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to do a trip report on Fodor's yet, but have typed my personal journal of the trip, if you'd want to email me, I'd share it.

Zephyr Cove is considered South Shore. The nearest beach to our condo was Nevada Beach and about 1/4 mile walk on a nice paved path.

There are several eating places in Zephyr, we thoroughly enjoyed Asian food at the Coyote Grille, which was a small place, but had character. There was a big grocery store just a few blocks away, others were in Stateline. After having been around the entire lake, I know if we ever go back, we will stay in this same area. We don't ski or gamble (much) either, but still liked this location the best.

Stateline was just a mile away. It's a fairly big town, with lots of dining options. We had a very nice, somewhat expensive ($75 for 2) at Chart House. Located halfway up a mountain, the dining room had an excellent view of the lake. Food was superb!

The Heavenly Gondola is at Stateline and most casinos are there too. You can ride up Heavenly even if you don't ski, stop half way at a view point, then go on up and back down. Does not stop at the scenic lookout on the way back down. We were going to do this, even though it did cost (I think) $30 per person, but the day that we had time to do it, it was not running. There's a nice shopping center at Heavenly Village in Stateline right next to the Heavenly gondola.

Other eating places in Stateline, Hard Rock Cafe & Cabo Wabo in Harvey's Casino. Timber House in Lakeside Inn & Casino was VERY GOOD. We really enjoyed the food there. There are two Red Hut Cafes in Stateline, one opened in 1959 & the newer one opened in 1990. We had breakfast at the newer one on the last day, it was so close of our condo. Food was great, servings were huge.

Driving from Zephyr to any location was a nice, scenic drive and didn't take long at all to get anywhere -- even up to the north shore, if one wanted to drive straight there. We drove around each day, made several stops, hiked some trails & saw many different things & toured several places. I took about 1800 pictures while we were on this trip, it was so beautiful here.

We spent time in Incline Village & King's Beach on the North Shore and drove up to Mount Rose Overlook, one of the best places to see the entire lake.

One day we took a luncheon cruise on the MS Dixie II from Zephyr Cove to Emerald Bay & back. We enjoyed this, but I'd recommend just ordering off the menu and not paying for the lunch buffet, which was just deli meats, cheese, a salad, soup & cookies. The burgers some others had ordered looked much better and prices were about the same.

I thought I would go ahead and specify more things we did and where we ate, but much to long to type out tonight, so please email and I'll send you my journal.

wow! That's what I'm talking about! Such great information!

We are actually staying in that same
time share that you did! We will be there 3-4 nights. I will print out your suggestions. I would love to see SOME of your 1,800 pictures! And read your trip report.

I love Vegas, (5 trips and counting!) Have fun, and thank you for your recommendations!

BC...
so sorry I haven't gotten back to you. I've been so busy since returning from Vegas.

Email me at home and I'll send pix and trip journal.

You will love the condos at the Wyndham. We were in the back, in Bldg. 7, but had a great view of the mountain right beside us, which we climbed one night. Didn't see any bear, but a guy in the bldg next to us saw a young one at 5 a.m. digging in the trash. By the time you go, bears should be hibernating.
