There is construction going on between Colfax and the Nevada state line. You might want to check out getacross80.com for updates before you decide to drive that way. The north shore is my favorite side of the lake, too, but you might enjoy the south side more for gambling - just personal preference, really, when it comes down to it. Have fun, whatever you decide. I have grown up visiting Tahoe regularly, so I probably take it for granted but when I took relatives there from the midwest they just cried when we sailed into Emerald Bay because it was so beautiful.

Just came back from eight days in Tahoe. We stay at the Hyatt property in Incline. Wonderful area for a vacation, lots to do on their lakefront property. They have a nice casino, public areas and the Lone Eagle Grill is at the lake. We fly into Reno, and it's a 40 minute drive over to Incline. I'd do that with a stop over in SLC.
If you want to see Stateline, it is a 25 minute drive from the Hyatt, on a newly paved road, and very scenic to see the lake. Very busy in SLT, and poor Horizon Casino is an empty shell, and in bankruptcy. All the table games are gone and just a couple hundred slot machines spread out in that huge place. Harvey's and Harraha's were doing normal business.
The MS Dixie leaves from Zephyr Cove, very easy to get to about 20 min drive. We took an 11 am lunch cruise to Emerald Bay. We went to Virginia City this trip, took the train ride and it was very entertaining.
