La Jolla,Coronado or BOTH??

Planning 9 nights in the SD area...
so far, I have booked the Marriott
Coronado for all 9 nights...should
I consider spending 3 or 4 nights
in La Jolla instead of driving up
that way 2 or 3 times...if so,
which La Jolla hotel would you
recommend? Thanks much!

Yes, La Jolla will give you a different perspective on the area, and it's lovely being there and walking on the beach and in the village. We have stayed at the Valencia Hotel which is on the expensive side. Many hotels have "La Jolla" in their name but are actually quite far from the center. I think that Coronado and La Jolla are the best locations for a San Diego trip.

La Jolla proper has not a single really great hotel. La Valencia was great in its day, but that day has long since passed and the owners are trading on past reputation. Rooms are tiny, bathrooms miniscule, furnishings worn, and the place just isn't as clean as it should be for the standard they're trying to set.
Location, however, is tops.

I would definite go up to LJ, even to Del Mar which is more charming. LJ is very touristy. You can stay in L'auberge in Del Mar

Definitely spend time in La Jolla. Del Mar would be even better.

I am planning to visit SD in August. I am deciding between Loews and Marriott but cannot find any deals for the Marriott. Do you have any tips or advice? Thanks.

Re: Marriott Coronado Rates

I kept coming up with 264.00 per night
anywhere I checked...the hotel quoted
that price also...but they do have an
interesting plan...for 25.00 more per
night, they offer a huge breakfast
every morning, plus movie, plus ferry
tickets...a few additionals that seemed
worth consideration...call the hotel
and check it out...might be worth it...
Good Luck!

I found the Coronado Marriott for $229 night includes breakfast. That rate is for "Rewards" members and can be found on their website - it's free and instant to become a memeber. see www.marriottrewards.com

the La Valencia basher obviously has not been there in a while. They remodeled the lower area and some of the upper rooms. They have suites/bungalows at the bottom level now and have redone the pool area. La V is a great choice if you can afford it. Don't stay in Del Mar it's much more conjested on weekends and weekdays there is so much commuter traffic that it's all stop and go. Del Mar is much smaller - but you should visit Del Mar.
