Key West Sightseeing

Have reservations at the Nassau House May 20-24. Should I worry about make-ahead reservations for sunset cruise, dinner, Dry Tortugas? Also, are mopeds really that dangerous? My husband has his heart set on renting one during our stay.

If you have your heart set on a particular restaurant, I'd make reservations ahead of time. Seven Fish only has a few tables, we had to make some changes in plans to get in there.

I don't think you need to make reservations for a sunset cruise before you leave, but I'd head to the docks when you arrive and decide which type of ship you want to sail/cruise on. We did a sunset cruise on the America, and some nights were full.

The catamarans that go to the Dry Tortugas are large, doubt you'll have a problem with them, might be a different story if you're planning on flying.

I have never rented a moped, but we had a great time riding bicycles around the island.

It might be a good idea to have dinner reservations. However, I don't think you'll have any problems getting reservations for the sunset cruises, unless you want to go on a smaller boat. We had plans to go out on the Floridays and scrapped the trip when the weather looked like it might rain. We had been out the previous day on a snorkeling trip with them and loved it, even though the weather was overcast and it rained on the return trip. Never got a chance to put up the sails and enjoy the trip, but the crew was great, and very knowledgable. Also, safety is their #1 priority, which is very important.

Regarding mopeds, I hear they can be dangerous, especially if you aren't used to driving them. They can be found in loads of places, you can check them out while you are there.

Dinner Reservations - It depends on when you are going. If you are going during a really busy time it helps. Some good choices - A&B Lobster for really good seafood and romance even though a little pricey. Two Friends restaurant for fun and good food.

Sunset cruises and such - Don't worry about reservations. Most people don't book those til they get to town.

Mopeds - I rented one and it was a blast. My friend broke her leg. Don't drink while on them and don't go crazy. They don't go that fast but you have to be careful. I would say go for it.

All: Thanks so much for the info so far. Don't have my heart set on any restaurant cuz this is our first time in Key West - or on the Keys. (coming from Pittsburgh -- wish I was there NOW!) How far ahead should I make reservations -- 1 month perhaps?? Our 10th anniversary is May 21.

If you are planning to fly to Dry Tortugas, make your reservations as soon as you have a date set. You can choose to fly either the first flight of the day or the last flight of the day when there are only around 20 people on the island..(before or after the boats arrive and depart with 200+ people) I just made my reservation today for the end of April. I understand that they are not usually totally booked until about a week in advance but I wanted to be assured of getting the last flight out.

When we were in the Keys we had the BEST time on mopeds. We didn't use them on the main strip but drove them around other parts of the island. We love a restuarant called Rick's Blue Heaven and Louie's Backyard. You would need to take a taxi or a Moped like we did. We are in our 40s and the mopeds were easy and an absolute blast. It allowed us to see so much more of Key West. We kept our mopeds overnight. We didn't take a sunset cruise but took a private fishing charter. I caught a 6 ft hammerhead shark - it was great fun and a little scary. We loved Key West - I think we need to get down there again.............. Have fun.
