This resurrected thread made me wonder if this is a common thing in Florida. I had a similar experience last fall trying to book a room at some small hotel in Hollywood Beach. The guy didn't seemed to0 concerned customers and never bothered to return my call when I did try to reserve.

Are they just so busy that they don't have to try, or are they really a front for something else? Enquiring minds are curious, but in the meantime staying elsewhere.

I think in some of the beach areas, they get exhausted with inquiries and then folks never book, argue about the rate, etc.

We've been renting off www.vrbo.com and at small inns and B&Bs for a long time and have never really encountered this but once. We booked a rental house and had ten days reserved over Christmas and New Years. The owner decided several months later and just weeks before we were to arrive that he wanted to split the rental on a Wednesday to try to get two weeks out of it even though it was a Saturday start rental and we had paid the daily rate for the extra three nights.

He abruptly returned our deposit without notice and a brief note explaining the reason for the change. We found a rental down the street instead.

We were somewhat pleased to see that the owner was unable to get it rented for that period.

This thread is 12 years old! I can't imagine that anything happened then would apply to now.

Well, one thing obviously has not changed: people's delight in other people's misfortune.

What, Dukey? What in the newer posts even remotely refers to anyone taking delight in other people's misfortune?
