I've just learned that I'll be attending a business meeting in Hawaii this January. If possible, I'd love to take advantage of the free airfare, bring my significant other and make a vacation out of it. The problem, of course, is money, which is a bit scarce for us at the moment. Is it possible to do Kauai on a budget, or am I dreaming? Any suggestions for nice but economical accomodations? Thanks

It is entirely possible I suggest a condo but tell us what you mean by budget? Go online and search Hanalei North Shore properites, Vacationspot.com, Century Reality (Kauai)(Princeville)(I found a $400 a week condo here this year but am staying somewhere else.

Kapaa really cheap, some deals in Princeville as far as I know. Rainy season in January but people go every year and this year they are expecting a wet summer and dry winter.

One of my coworkers just came back from her honeymoon on Kauai. They splurged on Maui so they stayed at Kakalina's B&B on Kauai for $90 night including breakfast and a full kitchen. She said it was clean and comfortable and a great base for exploring. The website is www.kakalina.com. I had seen it on the Travel Channel.

We rented a condo for 1 week in Kauai (bid on it and won on ebay.com) for $400 for 7 nights. It was a 4 star property, fully furnished with full kitchen and washer and dryer. It had bar-b-ques outside so we bar-b-qued a lot and ate in most evenings. It was a very "cheap" vacation yet wonderful! We rented a car through priceline.com for cheap too.

When in Jan will you be going? A few places lower the high season rates maybe the 2nd or 3rd week after New Year's.

Jan. is usually the rainy season so the No.Shore may be risky but I hear there are still deals to be found.

We've always stayed in the Kapaa/Coconut Coast area. Some inexpensive hotels, condos and close to Safeway/Foodland and a lot of cheap eats.
Plus, the East/CocoCoast is centrally located so around 30 mins to P'ville or Poipu.

The name of the place that we bid/won on ebay is Kauai Coast at The
Beachboy. You can look it up on rci.com (their website) and they have lots of information. It was located in a central part of the island called Coconut Coast. It is a "Gold Crown" property (RCI's best). I'd highly recommend it. I have no idea what they normally charge. Look on ebay.com, this is where we get most of our vacation deals. Kevin

kev, While I may be wrong, this is The Beacboy behind the Coconut Marketplace and next to the Aston's Islander on the Beach and BW's Plantation Hale?

If so, it has been remodeled within the past 2 yrs and looked like they did a very nice job.
We usually stay at the Islander over Dec/Jan. so we watched the remodel over the past 2 trips.

A few nice, and inexpensive properties from the Beachboy on down to the Wailua Bay Condos.

If you like to golf, check out the municipal course on the island. I can't remember what the exact price was, but I do remember it was not too bad and the course itself was really pretty (right on the ocean). We even saved ourselves some trouble and just rented club there. Call ahead and get a tee-time!
