Kauai North Shore Beaches in Late October
My wife and I will be traveling to Kauai during the last week of October. Our previous trip was in late November but we could not enjoy the North Shore beaches since the waves were so large. Will there be much hope of snorkeling at Ke'e or Tunnels in October? If not, where are the next best snorkeling spots on the island?

It is very hit or miss in the fall and winter. We have been there over Thanksgiving and had excellent weather for swimming and snorkeling on Kee' and Tunnels. Larsen Beach is really nice and calm as is Anini Beach. Poipu is excellent on the south shore for snorkeling. We saw excellent fish there.

In October, we still have days when we have to choose whether to load our kayaks onto our truck, or snorkel (or both!).
Because we live on the north shore, we do most of our winter snorkeling at Anini Beach -- its large reef usually keeps the water calm, even in the winter months. If there's been a lot of rain, we stay well away from the river mouth though.
Ke`e and Makua ("Tunnels") can have occasional calm days in October, if you're lucky.
Lydgate Beach and Po`ipu are alternate snorkel spots, too.
