My wife and I were there in mid-October in 2001. The weather was great with brief warm rain showers and lots of sun. The surf was up while we were there so north shore beaches had challenging snorkel conditions and a fair amount of silt in the water.
We stayed in a privately rented cottage on Anini Beach near Princeville and loved it. Check out Postcards in Hanalei for great seafood (if it is still there).

Some of our best weather is in the Sept/Oct and Apr/May timeframe...warm days, balmy nights, steady tradewinds at 10-15mph, and the ocean's still warm and relatively calm.
Rains are typically overnight, with just the occasional daytime shower passing swiftly by.

Glad to hear this auntiemaria! DH and I will be in kauai Oct 7-15 this year and we will be staying on the north shore for the first time. We have been to Kauai 3 times before, but always in January/February and always stayed in Poipu. We're hoping for some great north shore snorkeling!
