If I take one Patagonia pile hooded sweatshirt and one lightweight rain/wind jacket, will I be warm enough -- even if it rains, or I want to sit out and watch the stars at night? Any restaurants/bars I can't get into in a lightweight casual Mexican or Hawaiian type dress? Do I need a dressier sweater or jacket too? We'll be gone 10 nights. Obviously I'd get sick of wearing the same thing all the time--I'm just assuming that if it's chilly, that wouldn't be EVERY night. At the Kauai Marriott do I need one of those little terry cloth jackets over my swimsuit like they wear on cruise ships--if I have to navigate a few hallways to get down to the pool? Sorry about all the questions; am used to staying in condos.

We were in Kauai this past Dec/Jan and I took a Tommy Bahama lightweight fleece jacket and never wore it.
It got down to the low 70s at night but with the wind chill factor, it felt like a brisk 68! ;-)

I did wear a nice long sleeve t-shirt on a few nights.
Mrs Kal, otoh, wore a sweatshirt at night for most of the time.
Cold hands-warm heart!
Always in shorts, tho.
On the whole, almost all restaurants on Kauai are pretty much casual.

As for the Marriott, we run into all sorts of state of dress on our way down to either Duke's or Kukui's.
Whatever makes you mo' comfortable.

Pack Me!!!

I like packing some dressy clothes just for me. If I just pack for practical than I get bored with my clothes when I am there. For this reason I even like to over pack but that does not work for everyone.

Remember shoes. I like to take one beach shoe, lightweight hiking boot, dress shoe.

wraps are fun for the pool too. Yes they are handy if you want to pop in a shop and you have just come off the beach. Those terry jackets you talked about are great on a beach there.

If you wear a wrap, you may want to take along some duct tape in case the wind picks up at night. Sorry. Couldn't resist. "Say goodnight Kal"

Thanks for all the responses guys. Kal, I think I read part of your trip report. It's been 2 years since I've been to HA (we always go in Feb) and I only remembered that last trip - on Big Is I got caught frequently in the rain. Hoping for sun this time! North Shore Oahu, and Kauai.

HI, I live on Kauai and just wanted to tell you that the days have been beautiful lately (except for today - gray, but no rain!) but the nights have been chilly, I am always wearing a lightweight sweater. Have a great trip.

Here is a dumb question. I know the temperature in May, but what time does it get dark? Is there somewhere I can check times for sunsets?

According to my trust Yahoo weather website, sunset currently is at 6:29 PM on Maui.

You see lots of different cover-ups arriving at the pool but you rarely see someone arrive in their swimsuit alone. Lots of women use a pareo over their suit and men wear a shirt. Pareos can be purchased cheaply at any ABC store. Terry seems a little warm to wear in HI but if you get cold easily you may prefer that.

We have never used a sweater or jacket during any of our 6 trips to HI though we have packed them. When it rains it doesn't really get cold.

I live on Kauai and have never even worn long pants here! If it gets really chilly I will wear a light knit sweater.

You might want to pack some sort of swimsuit cover-up to walkk from hotel room to beach/pool.

We just returned from Kauai. I never wore anything more than a T-shirt and/or Hawaiian shirt with shorts, although I sometimes had an open Hawaiian shirt over my T-shirt and for night walks. My wife occasionally wore her windbreaker at night, especially when walking the beach. She always had her light colorful sarong with her bathing suite. Consider 67-68 degrees at night with 15-25 mph tradewinds off the water.

Why anyone would want to go to Kauai is still beyond me!
