Amelie, we posted our trip reports within a few hours of each other. I wonder if we were on Kauai the same time (we were there Aug 1st to 8th).
I didn't mention it in my report but we had the same negative experience at Zelo's. The waiter kept forgetting to bring us our drinks and had so many memory lapses I really wondered about him...my friend's husband ordered a burger that turned out to be inedible. He sent it back and got an identical one in return. My fish taco was just "okay". Had a better one from the fish taco truck at Anini Beach later in the week.
I know what you mean about climbing down tree roots to get to Makua (Tunnels) Beach. I made it down alright but getting up especially with beach gear was a different story. It has eroded a lot since we were there two years ago. The first side street entrance is close to mile marker 8 and level access. But one would certainly have to get there very early to get a spot.
You were very fortunate to have a clear view at the Kalalau lookout. Our friends drove out and couldn't see a thing!
Wasn't it sad to leave...?

Hi Maggi-
We were actually in Kauai July 12th - 19th, and yes it was so sad to leave! I miss it!
I never saw that first access road to Tunnels... I wish we would have, I hated climbing on those tree roots!
