We have our trip planned to Kauai for a week starting May 9th. We plan to stay in the Poipu area. I have been checking the weather for Kauai for the last 3 weeks, particularly the Poipu area, and it looks like 60% chance of rain for quite a few days.

Has anyone come back from their trip recently and can share the weather conditions? I know it rains a lot in Kauai and there is usually some spot on the island which will be dry. But isn't Poipu/Lihue area supposed to be relatively dry?
I see it cloudy/rainy for lots of days. We are travelling with a 2yr old toddler, so being unable to visit the beach will be very sad.

How to read Hawaii weather reports:
If it says "showers", then part of the day will be sunny and dry and part of the day will have passing light rain. If it says "isolated showers" or "scattered showers", then you will probably have mostly sunny dry weather with maybe no rain where you are or a little bit of light rain for a short period. If it says "rain", then you will have rain most of the day.

yes, don't worry, lihue and poipu will be great, even if there is a little shower here and there, heck whats the problem if you get wet from the rain or the salt water? its all good, its not as if it will be cold, your 2 year old will be fine. go to Gaylords for lunch with your child YUMMY food, kid friendly. on the road between lihue and poipu. delicious food, he can watch the birds play in the courtyard lawn and there is usually a horse drawn carriage you can ride a short distance on the grounds.

today was a definite "rain" forecast. Skies were dark till about 9 am, when it poured for about 10 minutes. then the sun came out and I worked in my yard till about 2 when it poured for about 5 minutes, then sprinkled for another 10 minutes. I drove to the bottom of our hill and from 3 pm to dark, I was at a party. We sat out on the lawn and had lovely cool, dry weather. There were high clouds covering about 60% of the sky.

And this was a rainy day, in a neighborhood much, much wetter than Poipu.

It would be very unusual if it rained all day for your whole trip. Possible, but unlikely.

Are you thinking of canceling your trip? or just worried? Take an umbrella- you can use it in rin or hot sun.

My husband and I just came back last week from Poipu. It rained overnight a couple of times. A few early mornings it sprinkled as we got out of bed and one of those mornings we got to see a lovely rainbow over the ocean. Out of the entire trip it rained once during the daytime and that only lasted about 10 minutes. Whenever we go to Hawaii, this is our typical experience with the weather, so I wouldn't worry.

We stayed in Poipu over two weeks ago, when there was much wind and many clouds but only very occasional rain. We had to wear light weight, long sleeve tops a couple of the days. I hope this very unusual condition for April has ended now that it's May (El Nino has been blamed), although I understand there were winds this past weekend. Still, Poipu had much better weather than did the north shore, where the weather was bad most of the week. We finally knew it would be a good day up north on our fifth day on Kuaui and took a trip up there then.

Most of the restaurants and other sights other than beaches are on the south and eastern shores. We stayed at Koa Kea, a wonderful boutique hotel where the service cannot be beat. Although the north shore is arguably more beautiful, I would not stay there in the spring due to the good possibility of rain, mist, and/or cold.

Many weather reports post rain or wind icons if there is any possibility at all. See hawaiiweathertoday.com for a more encouraging forecast.
