Kauai Car Rental

Does anyone know if any of the rental car companies at the Lihue airport have their cars within walking distance or do you have to take a shuttle for all of them to pick up your car?
Thanks!

You could walk the 2 blocks to the lots of the major car rental companies -- but why? The shuttles are right there at the terminal, come often, and will whisk you in air-conditioned comfort to their rental offices.

Hauling 3 weeks worth of luggage & two children in and out of a shuttle bus is doable, but if a car rental company had their cars right there at the airport, that would be easier.

KimF,

I guess you haven't heard of the famous Lihue Shuffle. (I love that phrase - who coined it?? Kal??)

One person goes for the car, while the others gather the luggage. The driver pulls right up to the curb, you pile in the luggage and the kids and you are off on vacation! Wonderful system!

Have fun!!

Be careful with the Lihue Shuffle! The airline lost one of our bags but the worker told us to get our car and then drive back around because it would probably be on the next flight. We got the car, drove back around to baggage claim and my husband ran in to look for the bag. As I was sitting in the car in the loading zone, one of the agents wrote me a warning and said that I needed to move my car or else I would get a ticket. I was not there more than 5 minutes and I was sitting in the car! THankfully, they had our bag.

ah, give those old deputy dogs a break, it was just a warning...it's easier to take a drive back around to the airport, not like lax.

besides, it sounds the op is the only adult traveling with two kids. i would take get my luggage but leave it on the side in baggage claim area (no one checks it), take the kids on the shuttle, get the car, bring it back to baggage claim, keep the passenger door open and car running and race deputy fife. they're so harmless, they just like to feel needed...

And if you're changing planes in Honolulu, it seems as if as much luggage gets lost as not. We got one bag, and not the other two. Ten other people were waiting with us, all from various places on the mainland, and all had gotten some, but not all of their luggage. Mine was delivered that night -- I don't know if the others were so lucky.
