Kauai Alternatives
We have been to Kauai 4 times and although we love it there we would like to try a different island next April. Is there an area on Maui that comes close to Kauai's beauty and uncrowded feeling yet still remains near to great beaches, dining, and must sees? Is the BI a better option? We are both in our 50's and aren't really interested in activities as such. Just the occasional snorkeling and mild hiking. Beautiful scenery and photo ops are the priorities.......oh, and shopping of course. Mahalo, Harry

Harry!
Yeah, we are getting bored with Kaua`i too. It's not THAT great. How can RichinPA and Kal keep going back year after year?
Did you make it to the parade? What did you think? I must tell that the malasadas were not as good as before, but the plate lunches were yummy!
We missed you at the GTG!

Aloha Bill! Yeah we did the parade, and I agree the malasadas were sub-standard. I think they were made the day before. Had much better results from the malasada lady in front of K-Mart.
Don't get me wrong we still Love Kauai. We just found ourselves looking for things to do the last couple of days. The island seemed a bit more crowded this time also. We paid a little extra to rent a cottage on the end of Anini Road to escape the crowds. Wrong. There was a constant parade of vehicles past our window and the week-ends were a circus with campers and locals on the beach. I can't blame them though...after all it is their beach. I wound up taking over 1,000 pictures and I'm still editing. When I get some done I'll post a link. Harry

i2,
Yeah, PM could be the token gay person on that version!
Harry,
Sorry to hear about your experience at Anini. Kal, I and rest of the Klub need to do a better job of spreading the word about how awful Kaua`i really is. Our next trip to the islands may be a north shore Oahu and the BI duo trip.

gr8yt--Have you considered the Caribbean at all as an alternative to the Hawaiian islands? We went to St. John several years ago and absolutely *loved* it for the gorgeous beaches & scenery, fabulous snorkeling and laid back atmosphere. Since the island is mostly national park land, it isn't over-developed and remains much quieter than most of the other islands. Great restaurants and hiking opportunities as well! The only thing that you'd probably be missing there is shopping, although it's an easy ferry ride over to St. Thomas to find shopping galore.
We haven't been to Kauai yet, but when we tell people how much we loved St. John they all recommend it, so we're planning a trip for next year (I'm glad to hear your feedback about Anini Beach because that's one of the places we were thinking about staying).
Good luck!

Thanx everyone for your replies. Yes Julie, St. John and Barbados have been in the back of my mind for awhile. This could be the time to get serious.
BTW, here is a link to photos of our trip.
