Just back from Sedona/Grand Canyon Trip

We just returned Saturday (6/4) from 6 days in Sedona and 2 days in the Grand Canyon. I will start with the hotel reveiws and move onto the restaurants and such.

In Sedona we stayed at The Ridge on Sedona Golf Course. When we arrived at approximately 3PM the room was not ready so we headed out for a bite to eat. When we returned about 1 1/2 hours later our room was ready and all our requests were met.

We went to our room and we had requested a non-smoking 2nd floor room w/ a view of the red rocks and a king bed. The room was huge. It had a full kitchen, dining area, living room w/ pull out sleeper sofa. It also had a separate bedroom with a king bed and a giant bathroom with a jacuzzi for two and a separate shower.

The hotel sets you up with coffee starter packs for use until you can get to the store. I am not a coffee drinker, but for those who are this was a great feature.

Our view of the red rocks was fabulous. We had a clear view of Bell Rock from our living room and bedroom. It was really spectacular.

We also had a pool and hot tub in our cul de sac. The pool temp was sometimes way too cold while the jacuzzi was way too hot. A few people complained at the front desk and they seem to temporarily fix the problem, but the next day it was back to the same and you had to complain all over again.

They offer a concierge desk which from my experience elsewhere they make reservations for you and they are there to help you. Well this is one of my complaits about the resort. The concirege is a glorified sales desk. If you even look at them they PUSH their timeshare sales pitch at you. In addition they are VERY pushy wanting to schedule tours for you. I had booked various activities on-line before we left and they were not happy with us probably b/c they would not be making any money on our activities. They were also very pushy with certain tour companies.

My second complaint with the hotel is the lack of customer service. I was expecting a guest on Memorial Day and they were supposed to call the day before. When I had no call the day before I called the front desk to make sure our phone was working properly. They tested the phone. The next morning I hadn't heard from the person by 9:30AM (they were supposed to arrive at 10:30) so I called the front desk and they tested the phone again. We left the room at 11AM and went to the front desk and told them we had been expecting someone and if they showed up later on to please give them our cell number. My husband wrote our names and cell number and gave it to the front desk. After arriving home I spoke via email with the person (unfortunately I had no way of contact while in Sedona) and she was there at 10:15 and waited in the lobby for 25-30 minutes. The front desk claimed to have dialed our number for her and she said she left three messages which we didn't get. They also never told us when we were in the lobby that someone had been looking for us 15-20 minutes earlier. Very bad front desk staff.

Overall The Ridges' rooms were very nice, but if I was returning to Sedona I'd pick someplace else to stay just for better customer service.

In the Grand Canyon we stayed at Kachina Lodge. I was expecting it to be as bare bones as possible, but it was actually very nice.

We arrived before check-in time and our room was ready. The front desk staff was very helpfull providing maps and asking if we had dinner reservations made.

Onto the room. The bathroom was recently remodeled and the room itself was spacious and clean with a coffee maker and small refridgerator. Only problem I found was the air was not sufficient to cool the room in the sunshire, but at night the windows left slightly open worked out great. The room was great and they provided some neat hair products.

Overall the Kachina was great and I would recommend it to anyone.

I will finish my restaurant reviews and tours by posting additional messages under this orginal post so if you are interested to read them, please check back.

And if anyone has any questions feel free to post. I'll get to them as soon as possible.

SATURDAY

We had a late lunch/dinner at Judis Restaurant in Sedona located on 89A. Both my husband and I had bacon cheeseburgers with french fries. He had diet soda and I had iced tea. Total bill including tip $25.87. The food was very good and if there weren't so many restaurants to try we'd have gone back.

We unpacked and took a quick siesta after checking in (it was now 5PM west coast time and we had been up since 5AM east coast time). When we got up we just took it easy and stayed by the pool and sat on our balcony.

SUNDAY

We were up at 6:30AM. We showered and had breakfast at the Marketplace Cafe. We each had three eggs with home fries, bacon and toast coffee and OJ. We had a coupon from the SuperPass book for buy one get one and the total including tip after coupon was $23.79.

From there we went exploring driving up to Jerome. Jerome is an old mining town and it was really interested to see and it provided a great view b/c it is situated so high. We grabbed some snacks in Jerome to hold us over until after the train ride.

From there we had reservations on the Verde Valley Railroad. The rail trip was an amazing 4 hour trip. If your going to Sedona and only want to do one excursion I would recommend this one. We saw an eagle and some great canyons. We also saw some really great rock formations that we would not have otherwise seen.

From there we went to the Radisson Poco Diablo restaurant for dinner. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Food was great, views were spectaular. They were also in the SuperPass book for buy one get one. My hubby had a cesear salad followed by a beef filet with potato and veg. I had a bowl of beef veg soup followed by chicken parm with pasta and veg. For dessert he had a hotfudge sundae and I had a chocolate mouse cup. Total bill including tip after coupon $60.24.

From here we went back to our room and sat on the balcony with a glass of wine.

MONDAY

Breakfast at The Village Griddle on Rt 179 in Sedona. I had a bacon and cheese omlette w/ home fries, toast and coffee and my hubby had 3 eggs over medium w/ homefries toast and OJ. His eggs were over cooked nad mine were under cooked. The restaurant was extremely crowded b/c it was a holiday so we decided we wouldn't rule them out completely for a future visit (plus they were really close to the hotel).

From there we went back to our room and killed two hours waiting for our visitor that the hotel never told us arrived. After that we drove to uptown Sedona and browsed the shops and made some purchases.

We had lunch at the Vista Cantina located on 89A in Uptown Sedona. The food was ok and the server was kind of rude. We would not go back here. I had a chicken chimichanga with french fries with iced tea and my hubby had chicken fajitas w/ french fries and a diet soda. Another SuperPass coupon and after coupon total including tip $27.38.

We walked around more after lunch then went back to the room for a siesta. Upon waking we watched the sunset from our balcony.

We then went for dinner to the Brooklyn Cafe located on 179 in Sedona. Another SuperPass coupon. We both had a full rack of ribs with french fries and two sodas. After discount including tip total bill was $41.84. Our waitress was extremely nice which made the experience somewhat enjoyable, but the food was really aweful. We had gotten full racks thing we would eat leftovers for lunch the next day. We left the leftovers at the restaurant b/c we really didn't want them.

Back to the room and sat on the balcony for awhile.

Very nice restaurant reviews, thank you. I love Marketplace cafe, esp. when they have live music at dinner.

I never really thought of doing the Verde Valley railroad, but maybe we will add that into our week btwn. Christmas and New Yrs if it is running then.
Where did you get the SuperPass book?

TUESDAY

Breakfast at the Marketplace Cafe again. We each had three eggs w/ hash browns, toast and OJ. Food was very good again. No coupon this time. Total bill including tip was $30.07.

From here we drove up to the Grand Canyon taking 89A and the scenic route. It took just over 3 hours making two stops along the way. We stopped at a rest area and there were Indian Tribes selling various items. I purchased a Christmas Ornament for $18. It was very unique compared to others I had seen.

It was a breeze getting through the admission gates. We waited in line about 10 minutes and we arrived at about 1PM. From what we heard the day before (Memorial Day) the admission gates into the park were extremely busy.

After checking into the Kachina in the Canyon we had lunch at the Bright Angel Lodge. Two cheese burgers with french fries a diet soda and an iced tea. I cannot find the receipt for this one and it is not on my credit card statement...I'm guessing total was approximately $25-30...but I can't be positive.

We walked around the rim of the Grand Canyon taking a lot of pictures. The Califonia Condors are amazing. Their wing span is supposed to be over 5 feet. They are truely amazing birds.

Having never been to the Grand Canyon before I was awestuck at the natural beauty there. I really consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to see it. There are so many people that want to see it, but never get the opportunity.

After walking around for a few hours I took a 45 minute nap. I got up and sat on the back porch are of El Tovar and read a book for awhile. It was amazing to have such beauty surrounding you. My husband now took a quick nap while I went back out.

I then went to a gift shop and purchsed a long sleeve denium shirt and a deck of southwest cards. Total $38.33.

Took a quick shower and dressed for dinner at El Tovar. Our reservations were for 8:45 and we were seated promptly upon arriving even though they were very busy. My husband had an appetizer (I don't remember what) and I had a scallop appetizer. He had beef filet for dinner w/ potato & veg and I had Roasted Duck w/ potato & veg. Drinks (you guessed it!) iced tea and diet soda. Food was excellent. Our sevice was good, but I can't give her excellent (very slow w/ some things). Total $133.58

Sat on El Tovars porch after dinner then back to the room to bed.

WEDNESDAY

Got up to see the sunrise (5AM). Walked around a short while then I went back to bed for a few hours (I am not a morning person!) My husband stayed up walking around taking pictures until about 8:30AM then came back to the room and slept for awhile. We checked out at 10:30AM and bought a few more things in the gift shop at El Tovar.

We hit the road to drive back to Sedona by 11ish. We stopped at the Route 66 Diner in Williams for breakfast/lunch around 12:30. We each had 3 eggs with potatos, bacon and toast. I had coffee and he had OJ. Total bill $20.15. Food and service was great.

Arrived back in Sedona about 3PM (we made a few stops again along the way). We hung out at the pool & jacuzzi at the Ridge until time to go for dinner.

Took a quick shower then off to Oaxaca Restaurant for dinner. Another SuperPass Coupon. Food was excellent and service was good. We both had chicken fajitas he had french fries and I had baked potato. We split a fried ice cream for dessert. The usual drinks. Total after coupon with tip was $38.47. Again we both really enjoyed this place and would recommend it to everyone.

THURSDAY

Breakfast at Village Griddle on Rt 179 Sedona. We're glad we gave this place another try. Not as busy and food and service were both good. He had three eggs w/ hash browns, toast & OJ. I had 2 eggs w/ has browns toast & OJ. Another Superpass coupon total with discount and tip $18.78.

Off to visit some rock formations. We saw Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and a few others. Very beautiful scenery.

For lunch we grabbed Wendys through the drive through and spent the afternoon by the pool.

For dinner we had reservations at the Sedona Airport Restaurant. Excellent views, service and food. We both had the all you can eat king crab leg special with salad, potato and veg diet soda & iced tea. I cannot recommend this place enough (especially if you like crab go on Thursday night!). Total bill w/ tip $87.10.

FRIDAY

Our last full day.

Went to the Coffee Pot Restaurant for breakfast after stopping at Chapel of the Holy Cross, which by the way was beautiful.

We were not impressed by the food or service at the Coffee Pot. I know it gets great reviews and I was looking forward to it, but I would not go back there. He had the bacon & cheese omlette w/ homefries, toast and OJ and I had Bacon, Cheese & Mushroom omlette w/ Hash browns, homemade biscuit and OJ. Our waitress was nasty and slammed things on the table and never checked back on us. Total bill w/ tip $20.93. Even though it got pretty good reviews I thought the Village Griddle & Market Place Cafe offered much better food and the service was better.

Walked around town one last time and picked up a few more things.

Lunch again quick from Wendys and the afternoon spent relaxing by the pool & jacuzzi.

We had 8:30 dinner reservations tonight at the Cowboy Club. It came highly recommnded and we were highly disappointed. This place in our opinions is an overpriced tourist trap.

He had a feta salad to start and I had rattlesnake soup. For entrees we both had beef filet mine came w/ garlic mashed and he was having blood sugar problems so he go his w/ a house salad to avoid the carbs. They also came w/ veg. I had a Cowboy Colada (pina colada w/ raspberry) and he had a diet. His steak came out way under cooked (and we had both ordered medium and mine was done correctly). Our waiter never checked to see how things were and my hubby had to send his steak back w/ someone else that was walking by our table b/c our waiter vanished. Once the food was corrected it was good, but for how much it cost us it should have been right the first time and the waiter should have been more attentive. Total bill with tip $99.40. We wished we had gone back to Oaxaca Restaurant.

SATURDAY

Our flight was at 10AM out of Phoenix so we were up early.

Breakfast at the Village Griddle on Rt 179. He had 3 eggs, hash browns, toast, bacon and OJ. I had french toast, bacon and OJ. Total bill including tip(no coupons left!) $27.77.

1.5 hour drive to Phoenix. Returned our rental car to Hertz ($238.53 for a week) and off to the airport via shuttle.

We really enjoyed our time in Sedona and the Grand Canyon. We would like to return in the future.

If anybody has any questions, again feel free to post back and I'll get to them as soon as I can.

Dear Nancy:

Great report! We are doing the exact trip in July: Sedona with an overnight at the GC. I will note your restaurant choices. We will also spend one night at the GC at Bright Angel Cabins. I have also signed us up for a bus tour in the park. Do you think it is worth it or should we just explore on our own.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the great trip report. I'm glad that you listed prices for the food. We are in the early stages of planning a trip similar to this for next Spring so it was very helpful.

Oh, i recall that thread now. You can also buy it for $10 in Sedona at the Offical Visitor's Center in uptown sedona, or In the Village of Oak Creek at Tequa Plaza Visitor's Center. But I think I might get it sent ahead of time as you did. It sounds like you got your $$ worth and more out of it. What kinds of things does it have besides restaurants?

MichelleY---we preferred exploring on our own b/c my hubby is a photographer and that way there was no rush. We found some of the tours were very long and we didn't want to committ an extended period of time to too many excursions.

HMC---I agree, food prices are always a help. Sometimes you want to splurge on a meal and keep a few others in check!

sunbabe---enjoy your trip, I'm envious!

emd---if you go to the thread I had on the SuperPass Book and follow the first link I have listed it gives you a breakdown of all the offers in the book. I really thought it was worth the $10.

Thanks Nancy for your reply. Did you rent with Hertz direct or thru another source.

Thanks,

MichelleY---We rented from Hertz on-line direct. We took a short cab ride from the Phoenix airport to the location on West Indian School Road and saved the outrageous fees they charge for airport pick up. We used the US Air coupon code when booking online and were able to return it to the airport without any extra fees. We saved about $70 (even with the cab ride factored in).
