LoveItaly flew cross-country for a trip with OneWanderingJew and they had a blast. How could you NOT have fun with JS and BG? (I don't "know" mat).

Well, all this pondering has led me to wonder if anyone, I mean two, fodorites have either dated or married as a result of meeting up.

Part Two~ Lava flows and dolphin showswishing I had a palm tree smiley..

Firstly, I had forgotten how badly some of you behave when left to teach the class w/o supervision..
No one in our group was over 43(cough cough, bug"spit").. and Kal, my goodness, you are as close to the edge of the risque innuendo as ever...
I meant that BG is 5 feet seven inches. I am 5 foot three and every inch is fighting for slender survival.
And another thing. I am no stranger to this newfangled internet friendship jazz, no sir.
As some of you may recall, I lived in the Aleutians for many years in a village. The computer was my only vice in those days, and I found another lost sister in the O.C even before it was famous.
Here I would be getting pelted by remnants of migrating Asian typhoons, while she pondered which imported tiles to redo her kitchen with.. the Moroccan or Portuguese.??
Flash forward five years and we met up in Vegas. She was slightly suspicious that I was an axe murderer and honest to Dawg, had a posse which included her personal trainer:_D..(I was required, however, to report back home asap after gorging my jowls at the Paris breakfast buffet, and declare my new friend safe and rap sheet free).
These are the same happy bunch that I had my "wives gone wild" weekend with if you remember my post a month ago!
** So this meeting of BG and matnikstym was not scary to me at all. Scary is riding with my teenage son and tolerating some of my Neanderthal relatives fyi..

Back to the islands..oy...

matnikstym lives in the Puna area, on which his home sits on one heavenly acre, and he has his own greenhouse full of orchids and wildflowers.. it makes my Alaskan garden look rather pitiful by comparison..
One of the exciting things in his subdivision was seeing the glow of the volcano from the end of his driveway on one clear night.
We visited the painted church in Kalapana, and saw where the lava crossed the road, then walked out to see the newest beach in Hawaii in Kaimu. After ahi burgers at Verna's drive in, we drove along the coast.

Hey nude beach fans, good news! Kehena is the beach for you(no, no and no). Pohoiki was nice and the surfers had perfect conditions for the day.
We continued on to Vacationland, Kapoho and were able to snorkel in the tidal pools. Sadly, I'm not very adept at snorkeling, but I did get some good pictures and added a few more vertical grooves to my freckled face. The fish were easy to see and beautiful.

It was the part of the trip I had been waiting for next.. going to the volcano park. Although this was my fifth trip to the Big Island, I had been encumbered by inlaws and young children on prior visits, and we never quite made it a priority to go to the park in the evening.
I had been to the Thurston Lava tube last trip w/ my family, but BG was experiencing this all for the first time and mat could not have been a more relaxed and informative tour guide.

We saw the Halemaumau crater and stopped for a sandwich at the Volcano House then headed down to the flow. There wasn't much flowing on the surface but the ocean entry of the lava was incredible!(I can see the wheels in Kal's brain spinning wildly..). On the way down, it took about ninety minutes and on the way back, nearly two hours.
As a teacher's kid, I was always fascinated by science and lava and any natural acts of nature(no, marriage is not relevant here)..I did have a pang of regret that my two boys weren't there with us that night, but there's always another trip(we do love our Hawaiian Vacation charters up here)..

Hmm, bodacious me needs some ice water. Part three, Kona and on to Oahu will be next. J

Fascinating--I'm so excited about seeing the lava flow into the ocean when I'm there in Oct. We will have several days in Kona, so I can't wait to hear about that.

I might have to pass on the nude beach. Isn't there a law against scaring the fish? If so, I'll surely be arrested.

Hey, gang, I apologize for the delay. I am supposed to be helping out "the writer" after I made her promise to write our trip report, but I am having computer problems. I have high-speed internet that's going at a snail's pace! Wouldn't ya know!!!

Anyway, don't let J fool you! She's as cute as a button! She has that curvy, proportioned figure that all us tall gals dreamed of having in high school. She is fit, bouncy, and let me just say when I saw this sassy little thing with a peach polo shirt and white skort at the airport, I just knew it had to be her. As precious as she looks on the outside, she is so much more on the inside. She has the BEST sense of humor, as you know, and she is also a very KIND person. Very considerate, and we were both pleased to find out we're both pretty much earth mothers! LoL

Then there's mat. He's WAY better looking then P Charles ever was!! But he does have that noble air about him - quite the gentleman. I could listen to his stories about Africa for hours. And he loves his home, which makes it so special for those lucky enough to get to see it through his eyes. It was my first ever trip to Hawaii and I could not have "done Hawaii" with two better people. They are both fun loving, good people, and I am blessed to know them.

I'll be back soon with details - promise!

Trying to get to this 'cause it's SO GOOD, but time is limited these days. My youngest is leaving for 1st year of college in a few days, so I'm trying to get ready for that, plus my 77 yo mother is up for re-election and I'm on the campaign trail with her. Not to mention DH would like a little time, too. ;-)

Oops, one more thing for tonight - I did miss you guys, and we 3 shared a lot of laughs over the many funny threads and Fodorite antics. It's so nice to be part of such a great online community!

Okay, we're ALL gagging BG. Alcohol can make us all look cute at closin' time, but hey, I love when my friends get failing eyesight, it's just a much sweeter world that way..
and Starr, you are a stitch! Talk about central casting- I keep thinking of Janeane Garaffalo's character in Romy and Michelle's h.s. reunion.. I think BG and I are coming to pay you a visit at your mountain chalet next year...I would love to pick your brain about Europe. When do you plan to return to Alaska?
Where is mooselywild? Speedbuggy?(You've got spunk, keep it up).
SistahLou, you seem like a good egg. **P-M, I pizzled on a lava rock just so's you know..
Okay, time to kick back. Peace out, J.
