JetBlue from JFK..go early!

My husband just called from the airport, he missed his flight on JetBlue along with 30 other people.

Seems that security and check-in were exceptionally slow this am, I don't know if this was an isolated incident, but he's a business traveler and was there in what should have been plenty of time.

Just a heads up, if you're flying JetBlue out of JFK, go early!

Just curious, JB was able to get him on a Delta flight (for an additional charge of $350) that leaves at 1:30, but let me ask you.

IF the lines are extraordinarily long, so much so that 30 people miss the flight, shouldn't JetBlue eat the cost of putting them on other flights?

Just how early are people required to check-in for a domestic flight now?

The first question is: How much before flight time did he arrive at the airport?

Security is now run by the federal government and JetBlue has no control over security screening or how long it may take. Since nothing they (JetBlue) did caused the missed flight, I don't see what rationale there would be for them to foot the cost.

I doubt many people observe it but, unless it has recently changed, the guidelines are for travelers to show up 2 hours prior to their flight for domestic flights and 3 hours for international.

Yeah, apparently it was a security issue, not JetBlue's.

I hate flying now!

Ditto, nina. I used to just be anxious about the actual flying part and getting there in plenty of time. Now the whole thing has deteriorated into an ordeal, at best, and for a nervous type, as I unfortunately am, the whole experience is just plain lousy.

I have found Jet Blue to be very slow at checking bags at JFK since the whole gel thing. I flew the day after the London incident and got there about 3 hours before my flight and needed most of that time. A week later it was still a disaster trying to check bags.

I flew Continental through EWR this past week and they specify to be at the counter 90 min before flight.

I wonder if it had to do with new terminal/equipment. I once had a nightmare there b/c they had turned off the electricity in the terminal overnight due to construction. Noone remembered to turn it back on. There were no functioning scanners. I made my plane though.

Just wanted to update everyone on what turned out to be the 2nd worst travel day for dh.

OK, the rebooked Delta flight at 1:30 was delayed almost an hour, thus putting the connecting flight in jeapordy. The reason for the delay? No flight crew, the flight crew was stuck in traffic. Oy.

The plane landed at 4:30, dh's connection was scheduled to leave at 4:35, but was delayed 10 minutes. DH ran like a maiac through the airport and got onboard. Phew.

When he finally arrived in Denver, 14 hours after leaving the house that morning, he went to JetBlue baggage claim to collect the luggage that was put on the flight - OK, aren't the airlines NOT supposed to check your luggage if you don't have a chance in hell of making the flight? But I digress...anyway, no JetBlue personnel are at the airport.

DH calls JetBlue to find out how he can get his luggage, they tell him he has to wait 2 more hours until their personnel shows up. DH flips out and demands they taxi his luggage to the hotel, which they finally agree to do only if he will pay for the taxi (he will).

Luggage arrives this morning after an expensive cab ride.

Question, why did JetBlue check luggage without a passenger? Isn't that a security breach? Shouldn't they have paid for the luggage delivery?

Isn't air travel fabulous?

The government and the airlines couldn't care less about security breaches. They want air travel to LOOK and FEEL safe, they don't give a crap if it actually IS safe.

It sounds like he was one of those unlucky souls that just happened to be the wrong flyer in the wrong place.

Flying sucks. I can't think of one good thing about it except it saves the wear and tear on your car.

With having to arrive so early before the flight, wait for connections, yadda yadda, it is almost faster to drive if you aren't flying cross country.

I fly JetBlue out of JFK frequently, and I've never had a problem. In my many experiences, there are 2 security lines that move quickly. I arrive 80-90 minutes before my flight and usually have time to hook up to the free wi-fi in the terminal.

Check-in time varies by an airport. Last time I've checked, Southwest Airlines had a list per airport advising how early to come in. Oakland was the worst with 2 hours!

I've seen people taken out of line to speed up the check-in if their layover was under an hour. Was it NJ? Not sure.
