Jackson Lodgings for Oz Traveller
I plan to visit the area early Oct 2003. I have seen many references to the Nordic Resort in/near? Jackson, but not many alternatives. Can anyone offer any recommendations? Also anything on the Northern part of N.Conway (so I don't have to drive through it). Thanks

Ian,
I think Oct would be off season and if so, you may find better prices if you just roll up and book something when you arrive. There is a great visitors centre in Jackson where they gave us a list of accommodations and they had brochures plus phones where you could ring around to find a room.
There is lots of accommodation in Jackson Hole itself.

OK guys, we're getting a little confused here.
Jackson Hole is just south of the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming....awesome scenery and phenominal skiing.
The Jackson you are talking about is Jackson, NH, a charming village on the eastern side of the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
The Nordic Inn is a lovely condominium resort that has been built over the last 25 years. It's pretty big, has all the amenities...pools, sauna, tennis, etc.
I would suggest a few things, depending on your desires. First, make reservations as soon as is practical. October is foliage season in the White Mountains, and it gets deservedly busy. Second, North Conway is the commercial center of the eastern Whites, so most of the accomodations and restaurants are there. Regarding lodging, and these comments reflect my bias, I would check into the Wildcat Inn, a small, historic inn in downtown Jackson, The Eagle Mountain House, a restored grand hotel that gives you a flavor of the elegant days of NH resorts at a price point less than the Mt Washington Hotel, and The Wentworth, a smallish, quaint condo development and country Inn in Jackson.
As you plan, be sure to include the Conway Scenic railway ride into Crawford Notch.
Keep asking and we'll get you a great trip!

Ian, try looking at www.jacksonnh.com. You'll find a very long list with links to accomodations in the area. On suggestion which does not make this list is the Pinkham Notch AMC Lodge, just north of Jackson. It's a year round lodge primarily for hikers and outdoors types, but anyone can stay there. Very rustic in a comfortable way, and shared bathrooms. Meals can also be taken there for an extra fee, but they are very wholesome and served family style. See http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/pnvc/pnvc-pnvc.shtml for more information. If you're on a tight budget or like the outdoors, this may be a great option for you.
