IS IT SAFE?

Are you my mother? Many years ago my mother & I visited my sister who had moved to San Francisco. My sister had the entire week planned for us, and upon waking each day would tell us the itinerary; and each day my mother would ask my sister, "Is it safe?" That line is now the family joke.

I've been to a lot of cities in the U.S. and went to Detroit to see the Tigers. The area around the stadium appeared generally, among the most unsafe looking in the country in terms of - lots of borded up buildings, steet walkers (crackhead types), empty lots, cars on blocks, grafiti. I wouldn't recommend strolling around or flaunting your winnings in the casino. If you win big, I don't think I'd leave with cash. Not to make you paranoid, but Detroit is realatively unsafe compared to most other areas in the U.S. A local recommended we go to a restaurant called Pegasus in Greektown. If you like Greek food...I'd recommend it and it's a few blocks from a casino (don't know if there are multiple casinos...)

You need to see Detroit's BRAND NEW stadium (might want to catch a concert there, the Tigers are having a terrible start to the season!). The stadium is right across the street from the Fox Theater and many restaurants. It is a short distance to Greektown, which is fun and hip. The Greektown Casino is there too, although I haven't been to it as of yet.
I must admit that I would not want to live in Detroit, but there aren't many big cities that appeal to me to live anyway. But it is a fun place to visit - and yes, I feel safe there.
Happy Trails,
Paul

Darryl, you need to learn how to post. You have another post going that reads "what do you think". This one reads "Is it safe?" Could you put the title of the city in your post? And you've never answered the Buffalo post about what you think of the city, after getting responses from 30 posters.

It is safe in most areas, but if you stay there you wont really need a taxi, the people mover is safer to me than a taxi. I use it everytime i am there and it will take you to all the major hot spots, btw it is an above ground subway. I have never seen or had any problems on it.Enjoy your stay and visit Greektown, it is by far the best of Detroit.

I live in a suburb of Detroit and really enjoy going to the city for the theater, opera, our great Detroit Symphony concerts, or just every Saturday morning to the Eastern (farmer's) Market. The Fox Theater is a beautifully restored historical landmark and an absolute must-see. The Detroit area is very family oriented and a good place to live. I'm sick of Detroit (and Michigan) bashers. We've had our problems, like any other urban area, but we have come a long way and have a long way to go yet, but I never feel unsafe in the city. Just my two cents worth-I hate the casinos, we never supported them and never will. In my opinion they just run a city down (evidence Atlantic City.)
