IS IT SAFE?

Is Detroit a safe place to visit? (day and night).

Mike Apr 29th, 2002 09:32 AM

Generally, no.
(Obviously you know this or you wouldn't have asked).
Lots of areas to be avoided.
Where are you planning to be?

Darryl Apr 29th, 2002 09:36 AM

Mike,
I'm planning on staying at the Omni (downtown). I'm going for the casinos. And was planning on getting around by taxi.

Paul Apr 29th, 2002 09:40 AM

Sounds like you have the plan, Darryl. Detroit is actually quite a fun town. Enjoy your visit.

Happy Trails,
Paul

Mom Is It You? Apr 29th, 2002 10:34 AM

Are you my mother? Many years ago my mother & I visited my sister who had moved to San Francisco. My sister had the entire week planned for us, and upon waking each day would tell us the itinerary; and each day my mother would ask my sister, "Is it safe?" That line is now the family joke.

Darryl, come on - you're from Buffalo. What are you afraid of?

Mike Apr 29th, 2002 01:48 PM

I've been to a lot of cities in the U.S. and went to Detroit to see the Tigers. The area around the stadium appeared generally, among the most unsafe looking in the country in terms of - lots of borded up buildings, steet walkers (crackhead types), empty lots, cars on blocks, grafiti. I wouldn't recommend strolling around or flaunting your winnings in the casino. If you win big, I don't think I'd leave with cash. Not to make you paranoid, but Detroit is realatively unsafe compared to most other areas in the U.S. A local recommended we go to a restaurant called Pegasus in Greektown. If you like Greek food...I'd recommend it and it's a few blocks from a casino (don't know if there are multiple casinos...)

You need to see Detroit's BRAND NEW stadium (might want to catch a concert there, the Tigers are having a terrible start to the season!). The stadium is right across the street from the Fox Theater and many restaurants. It is a short distance to Greektown, which is fun and hip. The Greektown Casino is there too, although I haven't been to it as of yet.

I must admit that I would not want to live in Detroit, but there aren't many big cities that appeal to me to live anyway. But it is a fun place to visit - and yes, I feel safe there.

Happy Trails,
Paul

Darryl, you need to learn how to post. You have another post going that reads "what do you think". This one reads "Is it safe?" Could you put the title of the city in your post? And you've never answered the Buffalo post about what you think of the city, after getting responses from 30 posters.

Darryl, I think you're the one who needs to get a life with your stupid posts. I made some reasonable suggestions to you but you're apparently too immature to consider them. Go find some other place to waste your time.

Dan May 4th, 2002 07:51 PM

It's not safe!!!! Stay Away! You'll be killed for sure!!

What a stupid question! Of course it's as safe as any big city if you use common sense.

Hello May 5th, 2002 04:03 PM

Certainly don't rely Mike's opinion. Anyone that would actually PAY to go see the Tiger's isn't working with a full deck anyhow.

It is safe in most areas, but if you stay there you wont really need a taxi, the people mover is safer to me than a taxi. I use it everytime i am there and it will take you to all the major hot spots, btw it is an above ground subway. I have never seen or had any problems on it.Enjoy your stay and visit Greektown, it is by far the best of Detroit.

Detroit is a nice city. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It's a bit rundown in parts, but every city has bad neighborhoods. If you have some common sense, you should be alright.
And definitely check out Comerica Park--the new Tiger Stadium.

Is Detroit the San Jose of the midwest?

Maggi May 24th, 2002 11:52 AM

I live in a suburb of Detroit and really enjoy going to the city for the theater, opera, our great Detroit Symphony concerts, or just every Saturday morning to the Eastern (farmer's) Market. The Fox Theater is a beautifully restored historical landmark and an absolute must-see. The Detroit area is very family oriented and a good place to live. I'm sick of Detroit (and Michigan) bashers. We've had our problems, like any other urban area, but we have come a long way and have a long way to go yet, but I never feel unsafe in the city. Just my two cents worth-I hate the casinos, we never supported them and never will. In my opinion they just run a city down (evidence Atlantic City.)
