Interstate 95 from Boston to South Florida

I must drive from Boston to South Florida on I95. My question is, are there any scenic parts of the interstate?

Not really. I-95, especially when you get south of NYC, is meant to be straight, flat and quick. But not scenic.

Suck it up, DeeDee, point your car south and just keep looking straight ahead.

Do you have to drive I-95? I've done that a number of times, but there is an alternate Interstate route through part of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia that is not only more scenic, but less congested, and seems to come out about the same total time.
The entire New Jersey turnpike, Delaware, and Washington to Richmond segments of I-95 can really be bad. Are you interested? If so, I'll look up the exact routes.

The scenic way is I81 south to I77. I77to I26 and pick up I95 in SC . Check freetrip.com to get you through CT and NY into PA. This will take you through the Shenandoah Valley and some of the NC Blue Ridge MTs. May be a little longer, but worth it.

The scenic route I-81 is twisting through the mountains. And the semis are a major pain in the neck, they have break away lanes in case their brakes fail. Not to mention, there are hardly any decent places to stop that are not redneck havens. I'll take 95 anytime.

Good, that's one less to contend with.

You can save time and aggravation by taking bypass around town when you get close to Richmond, VA - I-295 is clearly marked, and will save you from experiencing crowded commuter traffic thru downtown Richmond. Also around Jacksonville Fla there is also an interstate bypass that I would recommend, I always get stuck in traffic going straight thru Jacksonville. Right now the leaves are changing in central Virginia and the interstate drive in central VA is pretty because of that. I recommend Ralph's in Weldon, NC for BBQ and pit stop. Take the Weldon exit just over the NC line from VA, turn left, Ralph's will be on the left in about 1/2 mile. They don't take checks or credit cards, but food is REALLY GOOD and inexpensive.

If time isnt an issue i would suggest that u take 95 to delaware.pick up rt 13 south of wilmington...rt 13 takes u thru del,and maryland eastern shore..you will drive over the the 18 mile long bay bridge into norfolk area..its quite scenic, and worth the 10.00 fee..continue on 13 s all the way into south carolina..lots of small towns, cotton fields, wonderful mansions, and neet things to see...have a safe trip

Couple more suggestions:

Do NOT take I-95 through Philly (where I live).

Not that I don't want you to visit here (I actually do), but, if you're just driving through, stay on the New Jersey Turnpike (or maybe get on 295 near Trenton) and cross over the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Driving I-95 through Philly is a nightmare of traffic, particularly since they're now doing major renovations on that part of the highway. Traffic reports don't even bother to say it's jammed on I-95, they simply report where the jam-ups start -- and sometimes it's fifteen miles back!

I also agree that you should completely bypass Washington DC in any way you can (either US Hiway 13 through Delaware or US Hiway 301). The traffic as you exit the Beltway around Washington onto I-95 south is one of the worst in the country.

One more comment about I-95 around DC: it seems construction there is never-ending, and if you hit a backup because of an accident you could be stuck for quite a while. If you time your trip so you are driving thru the DC area at a non-rush hour time, you will just zip thru. Last time I had to go from Richmond to DC I left my house at 8:30 AM, and drove straight to the Wardly Park (Zoo area) Marriott in 2 hours exactly, and didn't speed either! If I had hit DC traffic between 7:30 to 9 AM it would have been minimum 3 hour trip.

Thanks for the info! I just want to get home so I guess I'll suck it up and stay on 95!
