I had no problem using just my US driver's license when renting a car in Australia just a few weeks ago.

Hi danny, I do not think you need a International Drivers Permit (Permit not License) when visiting and driving in Australia as if you have a US drivers licensed issued by your state of residence your drivers license is in English..and Australia of course uses the English language (well most of the time, lol). International Driver Permits are required by some countries..Italy and Austria for example. The IDP merely translates your US drivers license into something like 15 different languages.

But if you want to make sure do repost this question of yours on the Australian Board. And enjoy your time in Australia!

We rented a car in Sydney with no problem using our Canadian drivers licence. You won't have any problem either.
