I walk by it every day on the way to work. The neighborhood is perfectly fine, Gramercy Park. It is near Union Square which is a good subway hub. It is also a short walk to the E. Village, Greenwich Village and Soho. It's also close to grocery stores, restaurants, the green market, and lots of shopping (Filene's, Virgin Records, DSW, Sephora, B&N to name a few).

There is a high school nearby so during school hours, you'll see a lot of teens hanging around, especially at dismissal but that's not much of a problem.

I just looked up the place on tripadvisor and it gets very good reviews (clean, safe, good location).

I live nearby but have no idea about the rooms and the cleanliness etc.
The neighborhood is just fine.

how much is it and do you share your room? I stayed in a hostel in the upper west side for $32/night but did not know it would be coed! 4 to a room. I knew 4 to a room but not coed and not with a young man moving rhythmically in the lower bunk beneath me at midnight!

I believe the rooms at the Seafarer's are private - although baths are shared. The rate is considerably more than $32 per night.

Seafarer's is run as a Lutheran mission so I expect they wouldn't subject a female guest to the situation that ncountry experienced in the UWS.
