Info on Knoxville, TN
I have been offered an attractive position with a good company in Knoxville, TN and am wondering what the city is like before I move on with the process.
I have lived in Louisville, KY for the past 7 years but really have no ties to the city such as family. I work as an insurance defense litigation attorney and recently one of my clients propositioned me about coming to work in house for them, their company is in Knoxville.
I am 30 yo, single, my family doesn't live in Louisville and I am open to moving especially for a job in house where the hours are 8-5 (I haven't seen hours that good since I graduated law school!) The problem is that I always thought if/when I moved it would be to a larger area in the south like Atlanta. I need to know how big Knoxville is and what it has to offer.
I enjoy travel, good shopping, and cultural activities. Are these available in Knoxville? Can anyone compare it with Louisville? (I am hoping it is bigger and has more to offer but I fear that is not the case) what areas of Knoxville are nice? I'm sorry I have been to the Smokies but have never spent much time in Knoxville. On the other hand, I know Nashville well and really like the city, is Knoxville similar?

I'm moving to Knoxville in Aug. for grad school at UT, so I don't know alot about the area. But, it is substantially smaller than Nashville. We just bought a house in the West Hills area. Nice residential area. Real estate prices are great. Looking for other comments from locals too.

I will be a junior at UT in Knoxville next year (moving from Mufreesboro) I have visited Knoxville a several times and really liked the city, its a great college town. My aunt and uncle live there now in the West End area near West Town Mall which is the major shopping venue. That area seems nice with plenty to do and lots of shopping. They live in Gulfwood and really like it. I am counting on them to give me some hints on the city when I move there in August.
As for being like Nashville, it is not nearly as big and has more of a college feel to it. I mean the city seems to revolve around UT. Even though Nashville has its share of colleges including Vanderbilt, they don't make or break the city like UT does Knoxville.

I was also considering a relocation to Knoxville for a sweet-sounding job. I'm 31, married, no kids. They flew me down for a night + day, so my impressions were very brief. I didn't take it for professional reasons.
Knoxville seemed pretty small to me - and that can be good or bad depending on what you're looking for. The airport is regional -- prop planes(!) although some carriers may have added jet service by now. Getting anywhere requires at least 1 connection. The nice residential area was called Cherokee Hills - very affordable real estate prices. We ate dinner at what I assume to be one of the few cosmo restaurants in town and it was very good, but I suspect they don't have much competition.
I know Nashville a little better and the difference between the two is huge. Nashville is much more lively and sophisticated than Knoxville. My $.02.
