Inexpensive place to stay in DC

My hubby, 7 yr old daughter and I will be going to DC June 20-23, and are looking for an inexpensive place to stay. It does not need to be fancy, it just needs to be safe and clean.
When we were there last (around 12 years ago) we stayed at a guest house not far from DuPont Circle. It was inexpensive, clean, safe and quirky. (You had the feeling you were walking uphill in the hall, because the floor was nowhere close to level. It was an old home that had been converted to a guest house.
That is the type of place we prefer- nothing fancy, but not too far from a metro station. We plan on doing a lot of sight-seeing with our little one, and don't want to have to walk too far from a Metro station to our hotel at night.
Any help appreciated!

Based on your remarks, I think you'd like the Tabard Inn:

When I go to DC, I always stay in Alexandria. The Metro makes it easy to get from there into the district.
