I think I was in the Livonia store once as a kid. I had family who lived on Pennsylvania Ave.
My family has bought quite a few cameras from B & H. We like them, but they're not all kibbutzniks; some are latinos, at least behind the camera counter. They all do know their stuff.

That's the UWS to this eastsider
The Coliseum was the great to go to pre and post Carnegie Hall concerts. Bummer.
This is a major, major Bummer. Patelson's Music House is closing.

hi nstevey-
So as not to confuse any visitors to our fair city, the Upper West Side does not begin until Columbus Circle at 59th St!
http://tinyurl.com/c4ma7e
The all important 57th Street, home of Carnegie Hall, the Russian Tea Room, Rizzoli, Tiff's. the former Umbrella Man, the Art Student's League and heading straight over to Hell's Kitchen....is in Midtown. I think we Westsiders may have to design some some special needs helper maps for Eastsider Manhattanites. Although I used to live on the Lower East SIde, so I'm with you in spirit!
Shame about Patelson's, although they will likely continue through their website. It is the end of an era. The way an era ended when Freed's nearby closed- which was a hangout and slipper source for the dancers of the New York Ballet and others for decades.

You're right, UWS starts @ 59th.
At this rate, if they keep closing all these long standing unofficial institutions, I won't be able to distinguish NY from any other city. All the great and unique stores seem to be vanishing. It's all Banana Republic, B&N, Staples, Home Depot, Best Buy, The Container Store, Starbucks, Dunkin Donunts. If I need those, I'll go to the burbs. Oy.

Oh yes I agree, and the stores mentioned on this thread are just the ones that are easily known by the public, there are many others that have fallen by the wayside that are not as well known.
Like the guys who ran a Leather supply shop in SOho for decades that was turned into a starbucks.
But in Soho, Fanelli's will never die! (knock wood)

I'm writing down all the suggestions of the home stores; they are great! Have never heard of Tiny Living, though I check out apartmenttherapy from time to time. I threw out a lot of stuff when I moved into my new apartment and can only think of the fun of replacing it.
Adu my friend I will have to google Bridge Kitchenware and see where it is out here. Maybe I'll have to make a field trip.

The East Village is still holding out. Even the Pizzeria Uno on Third and the Gap on St. Marks closed. Don't know how much longer it can hold out.
I think this week's Time Out NY is about Indie Stores but I swear I knew nothing about it.

re McNally Jackson Books-I live in the city where we are blessed with the original McnNlly Robinson Book stores. I would have to say these are the best, most fun bookstores I have ever been in. Without having been there I would recommend McNally Jackson Books

On Prince right, ita? I was in there the other night. I like that store a lot---great for browsing. There are many author readings too.
I'd also add "Other Music" to this thread---a music store on 4th street. I always find something new and random in there:
