You can't beat ABC Carpet and Home on Broadway around 19th Street. It's HUGE...several floors high and there's a separate store across the street just for carpets & area rugs. ABC has everything from traditional to shabby chic to Asian to mid-century modern furnishings. There are a few other furniture & household goods stores on that stretch of Broadway, between 17th and 22nd Streets.

Weenie57 mentioned one of Manhattan's most unique home furnishing stores - alot of fun to browse in; think of going to someone's attic or an old fashioned antiques store, aand that's the kind of feeling the ABC store has -very creative displays!
Another store of a totally differnt style is the Conrans store @ 1st Ave and 59th St, right next to the 59th St bridge. You will find funiture, housewares, linens, lighting, etc, all with a modern and/or contemporary esthetic. Right next door is a bed, bath, and Beyond, for your nationwide superstore housewares stuff.
If you want REAL cutting edge high-end modern stuff, you can't beat MOSS, located in Soho(I don't have the exact address) All the items in the store are MOMA quality in design, and are actually displayed like a modern art museum exhibit.

You've been given 3 of my favorites. You might also try the Tribeca area. There are a number of cool home furnishing stores around Duane St. A few names are Dune, Room and Aero Studios but there are a number of others as well. Domain which is not far from ABC Home is also pretty nice (although they are in some other cities I think). Also in Soho Portico Home has some nice things.

You might also want to look around "Gracious Home" they have 2 locations 3rd Ave & 70th street on the upper East side, and 67th & Broadway on the upper West. If you go to the East side shop, be sure to stop into Grace's Market at the corner of Third Avenue and 71st - lots of wonderful food. If you need a coffee stop or artisan breads, etc. while you are shopping on the upper East side, try Le Pain Quotidien at 833 Lexington Avenue (between 63rd and 64th street) or 1336 East First Avenue (between East 71st and 72nd street). Also, there is a huge Crate & Barrel store at Madison & 60th - a fun store to go to if you don't have one in your hometown.
