Independence Air - Should I consider flying this airline?

Flew Flyi this past weekend with no complications. Flights were on-time, service was with a smile and planes are new and comfortable. In fact, on our return trip the kind customer service folks, after one of our flights was delayed a bit, changed our tickets to alternate flights not once but twice! Don't think twice about flying them.

OK, eulogy was premature. Recent Forbes story says they, like Delta, have about a 90% probability of declaring bankruptcy in next several days.
Otherwise, Wash Post had article today saying chief of Dulles operations is gone and they're cutting their new IAD-LAX route as of Oct. 1, already cut service to San Diego and San Jose.
They have pleased a number of passengers and infuriated others. Bottom line is that they are small, scrabbling for survival and hit by fuel prices. But hey, it's not much more of a gamble than booking Delta at this point. Difference is whether there's enough left over after "reorganization" to make an airline.

It's not a "gamble" booking Delta. Like other airlines (USAir comes to mind), Delta will enter Chapter 11, reorganize, and emerge. It's unlikely flights will be cancelled; in fact, Chapter 11 makes flight cancellations less likely.
A small airline like Independence, however, could conceivably go under, but there's no talk of that now.

Gekko, you do seem determined to fine tune anything I post. I should thank you I suppose, at least for giving us the currently semi-good news about flyI.
But quibbling about what's a gamble: you are more certain than some would be that precipitous actions such as Midway's shut-down just can't happen with larger airlines.
True, reorganization usually precedes liquidation, and sometimes prevents it. But just because some things have never happened before with the legacy airlines doesn't mean they therefore simply won't happen. Among other things, the price of oil has never been this high. It's just not that improbable that we're going to see some unprecedented things happening -- the shifting and shutting of hubs is just one example and elimination of routes on short notice.
If I needed to go somewhere only Delta goes right now, I'd probably go ahead and book it, but not without awareness that I might have to be flexible. It's all a matter of comparative levels of probability -- i.e. gambling.

Independence flights are pretty inexpensive compared to the biggies like Delta so I'd see them as less of a gamble than Delta in some instances. I might not book 8 months in advance but a month or two in advance for a $39 one way flight I'd jump on.
A friend flew Indy to DC on Independence over Labor Day and loved it- hot steamy towels handed out to wipe the grit off were a big hit with her.
