Oh Elizabet, what hotels have been recommended to you? As MichelleY just posted DO NOT stay in the TENDERLOIN! And yes I am shouting!

Please dear one, give us a list of what hotels you are thinking of!

Dear Elizabet, lets start over.

First of all, how much will your budget allow per night for a hotel room?

You will not get a hotel that is within walking distance of this school.
What information or thoughts do you have to commute to this school each day.

Will wait for you to respond - will check this thread tomorrow and I am sure starrsville will also.

Okay, this is what I would do.

I would get a rental car and stay somewhere where I could do the tourist stuff in the afternoons and evenings. I would balance that with the knowledge that I would have to drive in the mornings out to the school - but I would hope that the traffic would not be that bad going out of town in the mornings and/or my Fodorite friends would let me know what route to take or what time to leave.

If I were on a budget, I might consider staying elsewhere but on the BART system so I could get in and out of town for sight-seeing. I still imagine you will need to drive to the school. If I were on a budget, I would consider parking fees at hotels I was considering. Without mapquesting, I would wonder if a Holiday Inn Express at the airport would be an economical alternative - or similar.

I would research on this board Fodorite Favorites. Specifically, I would look for the hotel that Patrick likes in the Cow Hollow and see what their rates are and what the parking fees are, if any.

I would ask LoveItaly or others if the Noe Valley is close to the school. I would check into some of the vrbo.com options and email or call to ask about parking (provided? free?) and then ask about the drive from the rental to school.

If I were going to be in the Bay area for a week, using a workshop as my reason for being there, I would plan around my sightseeing. If I were GIVING the workshop I would stay close to the school so I wouldn't have a commute and I know from experience after conducting week long workshops I am too beat to do anything at night.

That's what I'd do.

First choice, Hotel Monaco if I could afford it.
Second choice, a vrbo rental if I knew what the drive would be to the school in the mornings and know I can take BART or other into town to sightsee.
Third choice - inexpensive/ reasonable hotels that Fodorites recommend but knowing I'll have quite a haul in the morning.

Heck, if you want a roomie, I'll be your chaffeur service before and after the class and LoveItaly and I can do the city while you are rocking and rolling...sorry, jazzing!

O.K. I'm back.
I am on a tight budget. The expenses for this trip are coming directly from money I am saving for a house.
I've been looking for a teaching job for the last few months and coming up empty. Last week I interviewed for a job that I thought I could not possibly get and I was hired. I am quite sure it is because I am taking this workshop.
So anyway, this is the plan. I will be in SF July 21-30. My sister will be there 21-25. We will do all the touristy stuff while she is there and then I plan on going to as many small jazz clubs as I can the rest of the time. I don't want to rent a car. I am perfectly fine with taking the bus or a cab (occasionally). Do you think BART might be on strike?
Here are the hotels the school suggested:
Hayes Valley Inn, 417 Gough
El Capitan Hotel, 2361 Mission St.
El Comino Inn, 7525 Mission St.
Days Inn, 3255 Geneva Ave.
Hampton Inn, 2700 Junipero Serra Blvd. Daly City
and the YMCA. I am seriously considering this. Sort of.
We are looking at vrbos, also. There is one way over on the west shore that is beautiful, but probably too far.
I have to take off again. I'll check back later.

I just got a call from my new job to come in and sign the contract. I was a little nervous that things might change before that happened.
Now I think I will spend a little more on a hotel! About 150.00-175.00 a night should be OK.
All I am looking for is a clean hotel close to a bus route and close to some jazz venues, although I will wander around town if I have to. Got any ideas?

Congrats on the new job!
I received an email that offers 15% off Kimpton Group hotels. If the rates at the Monaco are too high, I'd choose another from the Kimpton Group.

If you don't stay downtown, then I'd pick Hampton Inn off the list the school provided - but only because I like Hamptons.

Re location - I'll sign off and let LoveItaly or others give feedback.

Hello Elizabet, excuse my absence, had another problem that I needed to give attention to. It never stops!

Dear one, the Hilton is great!! A good place for you to stay. And let me add my congratulations regarding your new job. That is fantastic news!

Wish starrsville and I could be in SF with you to help you celebrate! Wouldn't that be fun.

You asked about BART. Probably you won't even need it. Unless you plan on using BART to get from SFO to downtown SF and then back to SFO at the end of your trip. If BART does goes on strike (which could happen at 12;01am Wednesday morning - a few hours from now) I would think they will not still be on strike by the time you arrive in SF.

The Hilton (assume you are staying at the Hilton in downtown SF) will be a wonderful location for you.

And I assume the school you will be attending has giving you advice regarding public transportation to your classes.

My very best wishes to you Elizabet.

If you aren't already a member of Hilton Honors, sign up online and take your # with you - even if you don't have a card yet. At the least, you'll start earning Hilton points. And, there's always the possiblity they'll upgrade you. If the hotel is on sale at Expedia, they probably have lots of rooms available. Being an HHonors member gives you a chance to be upgraded to a better room - or even the club floor sometimes!

Again, congrats. You and your sis have a great time in SF. One day I'll get back out to the "left coast" and maybe I can meet LoveItaly!
