My view as I write this ...
I was surprised to see this old thread resurrected! We have now been living on Kauai for 14 months and we love it more than we could have ever hoped. I am SO glad we opted for the view--instead of a bigger house.
I spend almost all my time on the lanai. In the winter, I see a parade of whales; most days, I see sea turtles directly below us. On two instances, we spotted 50 or more sea turtles at one time. Last week we watched a pod of spinner dolphins put on a show for at least 30 minutes.
I’m living in Princeville--high above sea level. We were not affected in any way by the flood. But my heart goes out to those north of Hanalei. After three months, that road (to Wainiha, Lumahai, Haena, Ke’e ...) remains closed except for residents of those communities who are permitted to drive through twice a day--at specified times. They are hoping to have the repairs finished around October.

Thanks, olesouthernbelle. The damage to the Kalalau Trail was so extensive, the rumor is that it might be another year before it is open!
It's sad for the tourists, but heartbreaking for those who live and operated businesses north of Hanalei.
