I'm not sure where you get your information, Elizabeth, but certainly not from an etiquette book. I've never heard any of your suggestions mentioned as possible hostess gifts. And what in the world is ruching? And logos? Who would give a gift with a logo on it anyway?

Here is what Elizabeth was TRYING to say if she spoke decent English and had ten fingers to type with, neither of which are the case here. Please allow me to translate:
For hostesses in Northern Japan, clothes are a sure fire hit.
In the South, rush hour is major.
Gifts with "Yankee" logos are a no-no in the South, and in Mexico.
