I will be leaving Chicago around 6:00PM, plan to drive for 5 - 6 hours and then stop for overnight sleep. Could you please suggest save and convenient town for overnight stop and nice budget hotel.

If I understand you correctly, you will only stop to sleep. If that's correct, then what's the difference where you stop?
Once you decide that you need to find a place to crash, start looking at signs for the next exit and what it offers. There will be information signs with a list of motels/hotels/restaurants located right by the highway exits. Exit, pick one of the motels/hotels, check in, sleep, have breakfast, continue with your journey. Nothing to worry about.
If you actually want to spend some time at about the half way point, then Memphis should be your choice. About 7 hour drive from Chicago. Next day have fun exploring the great, fun city.

Which way are you going?
Time and distance are quite similar using I-57/40/30 or I-55/44/US69. Personally, I like the latter.
If you take I-57, Sikeston, MO has lots of motels. About 6 hours from Chicago.
If you take I-55/44, you want to go past St. Louis. Lots of motels along I-44 at many medium-sized towns along th way.

Thank you for your response.
I am driving from Chicago to Dallas and looking only for the stop to sleep and continue next morning. I was thinking about making reservations at the hotel and make sure that the neighborhood is safe. MapQuest suggest to use I-55/44.
Thank you.
