My husband and I are planning a trip to the East Coast this summer. Our main purpose is to see baseball games in Washington D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. We have things planned where we can see a game in all three cities during a week. Our original plan was to rent a car and drive, but with the price of the rental, parking in the city and gas, it is quite a bit more expensive than we had planned, plus I don't think we need a car all week. Does anyone have any ideas on how we can get between cities without renting a car? We will probably stay in D.C. and Baltimore and make Philly a day trip. Is there public transportation? We looked briefly at Amtrak...is this a good idea? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

You can get to Baltimore and DC and vice versa via MARC train "Penn Line" from Union Station in DC and Penn Station in Baltimore. Also there is some off peak and mostly rush hour service from DC Union Station via MARC Camden line to Camden Station (next to Camden Yards, in Baltimore.

To get to Philly from either Baltimore or DC take Amtrak. Hourly service on "regional" service trains. Make reservation on line AAA or AARP discounts for purchases made 3 days in advance.

Amtrak isn't cheap, but its going to be the easiest way to do this. Much more pleasant than renting a car. Absolutely this is a good idea.

rockie, the idea to use MARC rather than Amtrak between DC and Baltimore is a good one and will save you a bundle of money. The Camden line, as joethekay mentioned, will take you right to the stadium in downtown Baltimore, but the Penn line will work fine too, you just might need a cab to get downtown from Penn Station. In DC you can use the metro to get to the baseball games, and in Baltimore, just stay downtown and walk.

Amtrak will get you to Philly, I'm just not sure how you get to the stadium without a car - it's way down at the south end of town. Hopefully the SEPTA trains go there.

Actually, one other possible way to get from Baltimore to Philadelphia, if you really want to save money, is by bus. There are a large number of new bus services in the DC-NY corridor that are very significantly cheaper than the train. You'd have to search for them on the inernet - they may also be a big hassle in terms of locations and comfort.

Take the train. Amtrak has frequent service on the Northeast Corridor which runs from Boston to Washington. It is reasonably priced and far easier than navigating I-95 or one of the airports. You can splurge for the Accela trains but you really don't need to.

BTW, when going to Camden Yards make time for the Babe Ruth house.
