Hurricane Lane is now expected to turn towards the Hawaiian Islands. A hurricane watch has been issued for Hawaii County and Maui County. The maximum sustained winds are currently 150mph.

Hurricanes don't often make landfall and when they do (Iniki comes to mind) it can be bad. The flooding (not from storm surges since the Pacific is deep around the islands) from the rain as those mountains "wring out" the moisture on the leeward sides could be very problematic. And the folks there simply do not have the "history" of storms which people in places like Florida and other parts of the east coast do so I am going to be watching this one very closely. Fortunately, the Atlantic Basin looks to be quite for the next week or two.

Hawaii county and Maui county are now under a hurricane warning. Oahu and Kauai are under a hurricane watch.

Have you SEEN the YouTube videos of people scrambling for water and generators? WHERE are these people? As I said above, many of them do not have a "history" with storms like this one but I guess they aren't any different than some of the folks here in South Florida who do have a history and still wait until the last minute. Always amazes me.

This is only the second major hurricane to come anywhere near Hawaii. Some of those people might be tourists staying in rentals. Unlike Florida, the Home Depot, etc. can't truck additional supplies from other places. They have what they have and that's all.

This is only the second major hurricane this year..Hector a couple of weeks ago and Lane now. Last year both Madeline or Lester came close to Big Island and produced flooding. The big one was in the 90s - Iniki devastated Kauai. Small target, big ocean...high mountains, like everything about Hawaii...unique.

on the Big Island, Hilo got pounded, as did the Hamakua coast, but the Kona side is fine relative to the east side, and Waikoloa hardly got bad weather at all! sylvia, I saw pictures on the CBS morning show. It's incredible what a difference there is because of the mountains in between.
