If you were traveling Wyoming and possibly Montana this October would you rent a SUV or a small RV? We're looking at Yellowstone and Grand Teton for sure but everything else is up in the air right now. Any recommendations?

Depending upon where you go you could have road issue eith an RV.

Totally a personal decision, I think. If you are experienced with RVs it might be easy. If not, the RV could be an adventure of its own, for better and/or worse. For overall simplicity as far as ease of maneuvering, parking, navigating narrow roads, etc., the SUV of course.

Both Parks can be driven in a normal car without anuy problem.

Where are you coming from or where are you flying to?
If you are not experienced with RV's, stick with a regular car and save the money for lodging. Gas is rather expensive inside our National Parks.

I would say that unless you are experienced with RVs in COLD weather, I would skip them. There is likely to be snow on at least part of the trip. Even the low places are high!

An SUV. Snow is a real possibility and a SUV is more suited to the many 2 lane roads you will probably be on. I'm trying to imagine the Beartooth Highway - billed as the most scenic drive in American by some - in an RV. I'm sure it's possible, but in my opinion not optimal.

As a former MT resident I'd go for the SUV. While RVs can and do travel most of the park roads OK, there are limits for them. I've seen people driving big RVs on Beartooh and was glad it wasn't me, and glad I wasn't behind them/

Isn't a lot of Yellowstone(especially lodges and visitor centers)closed by late Sept?

Not sure how far into Montana you're thinking of traveling, but if you're heading to Glacier National Park, the Going to the Sun Road that connects the east and west side of teh park will be closed. Additionally, they don't allow RV's on that road. Most facilities in the park and accommodations in and around the park will be closed as well. Weather and snow could also be an issue.
