Will be staying at the Mirage in April, but continue to hear some people say that it is an "old" hotel. Do they say this because there are so many "new", "better" hotels on the strip? Have there been recent renovations? Can anyone comment on the comparison between this "Old" hotel and a "new" one. Also, I would like to hear some of your personal (good and Bad) experiences at the Mirage.

I think its about 10 yrs old. I guess people say "old" because so many other huge properties have gone up on the strip since it was built.

Mirage is more like twenty years old, and while you will find others with differing opinions, I found the Mirage to be nothing more than average. The rooms are comfortable, but nothing special. And although I continue to want to like this property, and find the ambience favorable, I cannot advise that the casino is anything but a modest bore - it offers no "energy" in my opinion. Newer properties, such as Paris and Aladdin (within overall comparison with the Mirage) offer nothing better other than perhaps "newness". The rooms at these two while are better, while the location is also more favorable. But if you have favorable rates at the Mirage in the range of, say, $129 weekends and $99 weekdays, go for it. Unless you are contrary to the "average" LV visitor, little time is actually spent in the room..

The Mirage opened in December 1989. At first the rooms were full of tropical prints and colors. By 1997 the rooms were a sedate beige, rather ordinary. In 2003 the rooms with one king were burgandy with tasteful matching accents, carpeting and drapes.

What makes the Mirage above average is the tropical 5 acre pool area with waterfalls and palm trees for shade. Too many of the Casino's have gaiven no thought to providing a shaded area by the pools. Guess they want you spending more time in the casino and less time at the pool.
Good food is available at the Paradise Cafe by the pool, fresh cooffee at the Roasted Bean, fresh pasta & pizza at the California Pizza Kitchen. Ice Cream from Coconuts,Brazilian BBQ at Samba, Steaks at Kokomo's, Japanese at Mikado, Chinese at Moongate were all enjoyable meals. Have not tried Renoir or Onda...yet.
Mirage was the first to offer so much variety in one casino, there is no need to leave and go elsewhere. The newer casino's imitated Steve Wynn's sucessful plan.

Mirage was the Bellagio of the early 1990's. It was the first near-luxury mega-casino in LV.
The reason people refer to it as old is that recent years have seen newer and more dramatic hotels raise the bar for luxury and panache.
Much like a BMW 5 series from the same era--it was sexy and attention getting in its heyday. It's still a well constructed property, but it's no longer the latest and greatest.

Stayed at Mirage last summer - nice hotel - good service - good places to eat and easy to get to other hotels from there. We were upgraded to strip view room (no charge) just by asking - had a view of the volcano. I would recommend this hotel.
