I am just amazed at this thread and have to continue on in this debate. IMHO anyone who spends thousand and thousands on a wedding should be married in Disney, right in the middle of fantasyland. Dh and I were married very young and figured if we were grown up enough to get married than we were grown up enough to pay for it. Weddings last for half a day and people actually waste 25-50 grand for a few hours? If parents have chosen to save for years or the groom and bride have the $$ to spend then have at it but sadly that is usually not the case. No wonder credit card debt and bankruptcy is at an all time high. Keep your fancy wedding and I'll keep my debt free, cash buying only lifestyle. And yes I am high and mighty about my lifestyle choice, dh and I worked out butts off to be in our current position with the opperative word here being WORK.

Just elope, save your money for your new life together. It's pointless to spend thousands of dollars on a dress you will wear once for one day of your life. Not to mention all the other things that are jacked up in price just because it has the word wedding attached to it. Your love for each other will not grow or diminsh based on whether you have a big wedding or just elope. My husband and I eloped and we take our marriage very seriously. We didn't need the hoopla to do that. So just a little advice, that imho worked for me!
