I'm with janisj, usually carry about 100 local, maybe 300 if travelling further from home just in case. I usually find that smaller bills (i.e. singles/fives) come in handy while travelling for tipping purposes!

Within the US, usually around $100-150. But I routinely carry about $100 around with me all the time, so that's nothing new. I would never run the risk of being without cash, you never know, and I don't use credit cards for really minor purchases of a dollar or so. Some stores where I shop won't take them unless you spend at least $5-10, also (I don't want to hear about how that's illegal, they do it and these are cheap immigrant stores, Visa isn't going around inspecting my local bodegas). I also actually do check my bills each month and compare purchases to my receipts, I don't want to do that for trivial purchases of a dollar or less. Also, sometimes you could be stuck somewhere and need cash to pay a taxi or something, you never know. Not every taxi takes credit cards. I just think it's a risky thing to do and don't see a point to it myself (go around with no cash).

I just don't see any reason not to, I don't run the risk of getting robbed on a daily basis. There are just a few places I travel where ATMs are not readily accessible within walking distance, also (these are more resort areas, only for-profit ATMs are in the main areas where non-residents are in hotels, etc, the bank ATMs are out in the burbs, I think Stateline NV is like that).

I get about $140 every few weeks or even monthly, and that lasts me a long time so I don't waste time in stores buying junk food that I don't eat nor want. I hate shopping in any store and the timesucker it is, would never do that as a way to get cash. I had a friend who was always going to the ATM to withdraw $20 or so every couple days. Now that's a waste of time, also.
