23, plus D.C. but only following astein12's rule #2 (driving through a state counts). Six of those 23 states I drove through en route to Florida. The rest have been official visits. I don't count an airport layover as a visit, either.
Guess I've got a long way to go too! I've sorely neglected the entire central section of our great country!

Mexico,Cancun & Cabo San Lucas), Puerto Rico, Costa Rica (3 times), Colombia (2), Chile & Argentina.

A mere 10 to this point and I will be visiting my 11th state on our families next trip.
Guess I will have to wait until retirement to add a significant number to my list. I am looking forward to that accomplishment, although I doubt I will reach all 50 as there are some states I have less interest in visiting than others. Alaska, Vermont, South Carolina and Minnesota are high on my list of must see's.

I have the "layovers don't count" rule too, so I only have 30 so far. I'm also missing a big chunk of the middle of the country. I let my kids (10 & 12) include the airport connection states in their count, so they have 25.

I've been to all 50, but I count driving and sleeping in a state as visiting. That took me ahwile, as it was a goal of mind. Arkansas was my last to visit. Couldn't fit it in to a north or south driving vacation from CA, so just flew to Little Rock, and drove to Hot Springs! Alaska was on a cruise ship, but we rented a car one day. Didn't actually sleep on the soil, but were just off shore every night.

21 states + DC. That is atleast an overnight and at atleast one attraction. I can't think of any state that I've driven through without staying overnight and seeing something. Arizona (Phoenix, Sedona, GrandCanyon) and Hawaii are high on my 'Must See Next' list. Well, there's loads to see and in Robert Frosts words:
"The woods are lovely dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep;
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep."

I am missing six, Alaska, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Louisiana, and North Dakota.
My goal is not necessarily to visit every state but to visit every "National Park" (this means the ones designated NP) in the continental US. I am just a few short, maybe 7 or 8 including Teddy Roosevelt and Big Bend. I figure I'll never be able to see all the parks in Alaska.

46 US states (plus DC; minus Guam and Puerto Rico) but will knock out Idaho and Montana this autumn, which then leaves Delaware and Alaska as the last two to explore. Have also been to all of Lower Canada from Quebec to British Columbia and a few states in Mexico.
North America rocks! (but I love Europe too!)
