How many states have you visited?
I've been to 46 of the states -- only Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, and North Dakota are remaining.
I tried to organize a trip to "knock off" the rest of the states, but it was 13 plane legs and incredibly crazy! Which of those states should I visit first? I'm leaning towards North Dakota.... |
I've been to all fifty states, and both Hawaii and Alaska far exceed North Dakota for just about anything you could want to visit a place for. Even the main draw of North Dakota -- isolation -- can be better found in Alaska. I'd only choose ND if cost or convenience were a major factor.

I've been to 49, only Vermont remains.

I have a question...
How do you define VISITED? I've had this discussion with a few people and nobody can seem to come to a common definition. I've heard: 1) Any stop in the state including an airport layover. 2) Any time that you're in a state, but not at the airport. 3) Any time that you've stayed overnight. 4) Anytime that you've seen at least one 'attraction'. Depending on which you choose, I've been to between 26 and 38 (and between 13 and 18 countries). |
Personally, I only count the state/country if I've been outside and breathed fresh air there. So I don't count just being in the terminal.
The first time I was in Georgia, at Atlanta airport, we went from terminal to terminal on a cart across the tarmac (my father needed cart transport). I didn't feel like I had really been to Georgia, even though my criteria for Georgia had been met. Luckily I was able to spend another vacation in Georgia a few years later. |

As an adult I've technically only visited 19 states, but I've also taken a train through about 5 others. Also, when I was six years old our family drove from Michigan to New York for the World's Fair and that would add about another 2 or 3 states not previously counted (but I don't remember them at all).
P.S. I too would choose Alaska or Hawaii over North Dakota. All 3 are beautiful states but Alaska and Hawaii have things that you won't even come close to seeing in the other states -- in some ways (climate and scenery-wise) they're more like visiting another country. |
46. I have not been to Oregon, Minnesota, Iowa or Wisconsin.
|
12 or 15 depending on what "visited" means. Boy, do I have a log way to go!
|
All 50 and not any JUST in a terminal.
I would choose Alaska, North Dakota (Teddy Roosevelt National park) Missiissippi and Hawaii in that order. Hawaii being my least favorite state and Montana being my favorite----which is why I retired here in the great northwest section of Montana. |
John,
Thanks for the plug for TRNP. We are staying over in Dickerson next Sunday, and recently revised the next leg of the journey to Glacier so we would have time to see Teddy Roosevelt NP. We'll be doing that Monday morning on the way to Great Falls. Sunday night we're heading for Mendora for the pitchfork fondue. |
Only 11 for me and only 1 other country. Boy do I have a lot of catching up to do!
|
46. Missing Alaska, Arkansas, Mississippi, and North Dakota. Should make a heck of a road trip.
|
42 so far, and that is not counting the airport thing!
|
i've been to 31 states. funny you should ask today because i just happened to count them yesterday. i had the atlas out to see exactly where all the towns were on the florida panhandle.
i also went ahead and counted the number of countries i've been to---31 too! i'm going to nevada in september, my 32nd state, and now i'm going to have to figure out a new country to hit. |
27 that I have had overnight stays, business or pleasure.
|
It's 46 for me. Missing Alaska, Mississippi,Arkansas and South Carolina.
Where are you starting from? North Dakota can be done on the way to somewhere else pretty easily. Also consider jumping across the Red River from Minnesota. |
I have been to 49 states, only missing Alaska. |
47.
I just last week visited #47 - Vermont. Just need Alaska, Kansas and West Virginia. As Neil said, sure will be a heck of a road trip. You should go to Alaska next and be sure to post a trip report! |
20 states -- all have had overnight trips (business or pleasure) plus the District of Columbia.
